West High and Liberty High Have Singles Players and Doubles Teams Secure Spots at State Tennis Meet

IOWA CITY – West High and Liberty High each had a singles player and a doubles team secure spot at the Class 2A individual state tennis tournament with top-two finishes at regional tournaments on Monday.
West High senior Maggie Shin secured a spot at the state tournament with a runner-up finish in the singles bracket at the Region 5 tournament held at West High.
Shin defeated Evi Smith of City high 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and downed Olivia Young of Cedar Rapids Jefferson 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Lily Holland of Cedar Rapids Jefferson defeated Shin 6-1, 7-5 in the championship match.
The West High doubles tandem of Marie Stier and Claire Hahn also secured a spot at the state tournament with a runner-up regional finish on Monday.
Hahn and Stier defeated the Marion team of Kadia Cole and Chloe Pilcher in the quarterfinals and downed the second-seeded Burlington tandem of Emily Mosley and Annalise Buxton 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.
In the title match Hahn and Stier won the opening set 6-3 over the Marion team of Michaela Goad and Natalee Hartman.
However, top-seeded Goad and Hartman responded by winning the final two sets 6-0, 6-0 to win the Region 8 title at Clinton.
The Liberty High doubles team of Vivian Kahler and Lucy Lohman won the Region 8 title defeated the Dubuque Hempstead squad of Mya Hoden and Claire Kelley 7-5, 6-4.
Liberty High senior Ella Gilbert secured a spot at the state meet with a runner-up finish in the Region 8 singles tournament.
Gilbert fell to Sescie Haan of Clinton 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the title match.
The Class 2A state singles and doubles tournament is scheduled for May 24-25 at Johnston High School.
