IOWA CITY – West High took over hosting duties for the Mississippi Valley Conference Valley Division meet on short notice after Thursday’s thunderstorms forced a postponement.
Then on Friday the Trojans took care of business on their home turf.
West High won eight events and added seven runner-up finishes while running away with the Valley Division team title on a sunny afternoon at Trojan Field in Iowa City.
“Winning this is something we talk about almost every day,” West High senior Izaiah Loveless said. “We wanted to win this meet but every meet we want to keep improving and getting faster and that’s what our main goal is.”
Loveless won the 100 and anchored the Trojans to titles in the sprint medley and 4×200 relays as West High rolled up 172.5 points to outdistance runner-up Cedar Rapids Kennedy by 14.5.
Linn-Mar was third with 100 points and City High was fourth with 88.
Moustafa Tiea won the 400 (49.7), Aidan Jacobsen won the 400 hurdles (52.91) and Collin Whitters won the discus (155-7) for West High which also won titles in the 4×400 and distance medley relays.
“I think we did well today,” Loveless said. “We want to get ready for state and we want to keep getting faster every meet the rest of the season.”
Loveless led the way for West High on Friday on his way to being named Valley Division athlete of the year.
He won the 100 in 10.84 and helped joined Todd Rent, Mason Woods and Julian Manson in winning both the sprint medley and 4×200 relays.
The foursome won the sprint medley with Loveless on the 400-meter anchor in 1:32.55.
That foursome won the 4×200 in a season-best time of 1:27.42 which ranks third in the state this spring.
“I think we are doing a really good job with the 4×200 this year,” Loveless said. “We didn’t have Aidan (Jacobsen) today as he focused on other things but putting another guy in there we are still succeeding, still running 1:27 and that’s really good for us.”
West High got individual runner-up finishes from Jacobsen in the long jump, Winner Ndjibu in the discus, Manson in the 200, Tiea in the 800 and Waleed Ibrahim in the 400 hurdles.
The Trojans also finished runner-up in the 4×100 and shuttle hurdle relays.
City High got a strong effort from AJ Wright who was runner-up to Loveless in the 100 in a career-best time of 10.86.
The City High sprint medley foursome of Miles Parlet, Phillip Kaplan, Wright and Jeremiah Madlock finished runner-up in 1:33.26.
Wright was also part of the City High 4×200 team that was third in 1:28.7 and the Little Hawk 4×100 team that was seventh.
