MARION – Solon track and field coach Jessica Hotek knew that if senior spring Mia Duckett could stay healthy she was capable of big things in her final prep season.
Unfortunately the injuries that have hampered Duckett at times throughout her career have continued this spring.
Even injuries haven’t prevented Duckett from posting a strong final season.
Duckett won an individual title and was a part of two relay wins on Thursday as Solon finished runner-up at the WAMAC Conference Meet on a rainy evening at Marion Stadium.
“I think her having this success even with her injuries kind of shows what she is truly capable of,” Hotek said. “Keeping her healthy throughout a season has been extremely difficult all four of her years but if we can keep her healthy she has showed what she can do.”
Shin splints have kept Duckett from practicing much this season.
Really, the only time Duckett is able to run is during meets.
Duckett continued to shine through the setbacks on Thursday winning the 100 in 12.52 and anchoring Solon to wins in both the 4×100 and 4×200 relays.
“I haven’t been doing any workouts at all, I’ve only been racing in meets so I don’t know where some of these times are coming from,” Duckett said. “I don’t know how to explain it but I’m not complaining.
Duckett joined Aly Stahle and Sydney Dee as individual winners for Solon on Thursday as the Spartans finished with 152 points.
Mount Vernon won the team title to stop a string of three consecutive conference crowns for the Spartans.
“We went out and we battled every single event, every race and I am really proud of how they handled it,” Hotek said. “We had a couple of falls in the hurdles, Gracie (Federspiel) was only able to run two of her events and I was really proud of how they competed. Whether it was first place or eighth place they were really battling for every point.”
Dee had an impressive evening, winning the 1,500 in 5:08.14 and finishing runner-up in the 3,000 in 11:11.21.
“Sydney is doing both golf and track and she had a super busy week and was on her feet a lot so I was a little worried about that coming in,” Hotek said. “I think that tonight also shows what she’s truly capable of and she’s coming on at the right time.”
Aly Stahle won the 100 hurdles in 15.69 and was third in the 100 in 12.67 while Abigail Felton was runner-up in the discus (108-7) and third in the shot put (35-11).
Federspiel was runner-up in the 400 (59.03) and anchored the Solon sprint medley relay team to a win in 1:48.85.
Duckett ran the anchor on the Solon 4×100 that won in 50.57 and the Spartans’ 4×200 team that clocked a winning time of 1:48.69.
“We’ve lost good people every year from our relays but every year we have people that come in and are ready to fill the spots,” Duckett said. “I think that says a lot about our team.”
Clear Creek Amana got a runner-up finish from Elizabeth Timmerman runner-up in the long jump (16-1 ½) and finished sixth with 64 points.
Timmerman was also third in the 200 in 26.54 and Bliss Beck was fourth in the high jump for the Clippers.
