MOUNT PLEASANT – Defending 3A state champion Solon will return to Drake Stadium next Thursday seeking to defend its title.
If the performance at Thursday’s Class 3A state qualifying meet is any indication the Spartans appear more than prepared for the task.
Solon won 13 events and had seven runner-up finishes on Thursday racking up 228 points on its way to the state qualifying team title at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex in Mount Pleasant.
“They showed up and they came out and competed and they were fighting for every spot,” first-year Solon head coach Jessica Brimeyer said. “It was a really well-rounded team effort from field events to on the track. Everything went really well.”
Solon entered the state qualifying meet with the top seed in 17 or 19 events.
The Spartans were as dominant on the track as they were on paper.
Solon automatically qualified six relays and 14 individual entries in 10 different events for the state track and field meet that begins May 18 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
“Last year I never really had it in my sights to win a state championship but I feel like all of us understand what our goal is this year,” Solon senior Sophia Stahle said. “We have such a good crew here, we all love each other and are so supportive of one another and we’ve worked our butts off in the offseason.”
Solon won six relays on Thursday, all but the 4×200, and finished first and second in in the 200, 400, 400 hurdles and discus.
“The 228 points for Solon were more than 100 more than runner-up Clear Creek Amana which finished with 126.
“We did amazing,” Solon senior Emma Wolff said. “In every event we did what we wanted to accomplish.”
Junior Gracie Federspiel won the 400 and 800 and anchored the 4×400 and 4×800 relay teams to wins.
Piper Stahle won the 100, Aly Stahle won the 200 and Sophia Stahle won the 400 hurdles for Solon which also got titles from Kayla Young in the 3,000 and Kate Shafer in the discus.
“Our coaches just wanted us to run the way we would at any other meet,” Sophia Stahle said. “We knew we had to go out and compete the same way that we always would.”
The Solon foursome of Mia Stahle, Calla Foster, Sophia Stahle and Aly Stahle won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:05.56 and the 4×100 team of Mia Duckett, Emma Wolff, Piper Stahle and Aly Stahle won in 49.74.
“We do a good job of prioritizing our relays,” Wolff said. “We stack our relays and we were able to have success in those events.”
Solon added relay titles in the distance medley (Mia Stahle, Piper Stahle, Grace Hoeper and Anna Quillin) and the sprint medley (Duckett, Wolff, Aly Stahle and Sophia Stahle).
As well as the 4×400 (Kobi Lietz, Kerrigan Lyons, Hoeper and Federspiel) and 4×800 (Quillin, Hoeper, Ashlyn Williams and Federspiel).
“They never settle, they are always competing against themselves to get better and better and so I think going into the state meet they are going to have the exact same attitude,” Brimeyer said. “They are going to settle they still have goals and things they want to achieve.”
Solon also got runner-up individual finishes from Duckett in the 200, Lietz in the 400, Sophia Stahle in the 100 hurdles, Mia Stahle in the 400 hurdles.
In the field events Hailey Miller was runner-up in the long jump, Leah Kollar was second in the shot put and Abigail Felton was runner-up in the discus.
In all Solon automatically qualified 20 entries in 16 events and is still waiting on additional qualifies that will be announced later this week.
“I definitely think we should go into next week feeling really good,” Wolff said. “We did everything we wanted to do tonight.”
