IOWA CITY – Moustafa could tell from listening to head coach TJ Craig that winning a Mississippi Valley Conference divisional title was a top priority
It was anything specific Craig said or the tone the West High head coach used but rather when Craig mentioned winning a divisional crown.
“Coach kept telling us before the season even started that we had to win the conference meet,” Tiea said. “He wouldn’t bring that up that early if it wasn’t important.”
Tiea proved astute in his reasoning and on Thursday Tiea and his teammates emerged at the top of the a loaded MVC Valley Divisional meet.
West High won six events, including the final two of the night to edge cross-town rival City High for the MVC divisional title on a warm evening at Raffensperger Track in Iowa City.
“This was at the top of the list, we wanted to win the conference meet we knew we’d be on the same side as City High, we knew it would be a challenge, we knew Linn-Mar would be a challenge,” Craig said. “We knew this was going to be a big challenge and we wanted to have the best team effort that we could.”
Tiea joined teammates Aidan Jacobsen and Izaiah Loveless as individual event winners by defending his MVC divisional title in the 800 and anchored two of the three relay wins for the Trojans.
West High finished 12 points in front of City High with 148 points while Linn-Mar was third with 111 points and Cedar Rapids Kennedy was fourth with 106.5.
“There’s a little more extra juice when we are at City High and we knew it would be a tight race and we were here for a fight,” Craig said. “All the guys responded well. It’s pretty awesome.”
Tiea anchored West High’s winning distance medley team and the Trojan’s runner-up sprint medley team.
He helped lock up the team title by anchoring West High to a first-place finish in the 4×400 in a time of 3:25.64.
West High trailed City High by five points after Truman Thompson and Ammon Smith finished first and second in the 1,600 for the Little Hawks.
West High responded by winning the final two events, claiming titles in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays.
“I heard that we were down four or five after the mile and I knew it was over,” Jacobsen said. “Our 4×1 we all know what they can do and our 4×4 all we had to do was get the stick around and we ended up winning the thing. It’s a great feeling.”
The West High 4×100 team of Todd Rent, Loveless, Daniel Robinson and Christian Janis won in 42.6 to give West High a late lead.
West High’s 4×400 took care of the rest as Jacobsen, Carson Teghanemt, Mason Van Waning and Tiea won in 3:25.64.
“I felt amazing going into those two relays,” Loveless said. “When I heard we were just down a few points I knew we could bring it home.”
Loveless won an individual title in the 400 and added runner-up finishes in both the 100 and 200.
Jacobsen won the long jump and was runner-up in the 400 hurdles as the Trojans had five runner-up finishes.
“This was up there towards the top of our goals,” Jacobsen said. “The first thing on our radar was winning the conference championship, this is the first meet that we were really going to go for. It’s always a big deal for us.”
City High got titles from Thompson in the 1,600, Ford Washburn in the 3,200 and Matt Schaeckenbach in the high jump.
Washburn ran the third fastest 3,200 time in state history and set MVC and City High records while winning in 8:54.04.
City High also won the 4×800.
“I knew when we didn’t all of our guys hard we probably weren’t going to win it but I told everybody should be talking to that team over there,” City High Coach Mike Moore said pointing toward West High. “They are doing a hell of a job.”
