SOLON – Defending Class 3A state champion Solon lost several key pieces from last year’s championship team.
The Spartans have spent the first half of the season proving that despite the losses from a year ago they are once again a title contender.
On Tuesday Solon made the most of its only opportunity this spring to show a home crowd that it is still one of the premier programs in the state.
Solon won nine events and cruised to the team title with 215 points at the Denny Gruber Relays at Solon High School.
“I know a lot of people thought we lost a lot from last year but we have come together as a team and I think we are just as good as we were last year,” Solon junior Gracie Federspiel said. “It’s fun to keep showing what our team has become and how good we can be.”
Senior Kayla Young won titles in the 1,500 and 3,000 and Federspiel, Anna Quillin and Sophia Stahle added individual titles as Solon finished 52 points in front of runner-up Mount Vernon.
Marion was third with 58 points and Regina was fourth with 44.
“I think they ran well, jumped well, threw well all around I think it was a good well-rounded meet,” first-year Solon head coach Jessica Brimeyer said. “Obviously we have a lot of depth as a team and I think that showed tonight.”
Solon won four relay titles and had 10 runner-up finishes on Thursday on its way to the team title in front of a large home crowd.
The Spartans won the shuttle hurdle, 4×800, 4×400 and 4×100 relays.
Federspiel was a part of the winning 4×800 and 4×400 teams to go with an individual title in the 400.
“I was honestly a little bit nervous just because there are so many people that come to this,” Federspiel said. “Our community is so supportive so I really wanted to show up and really give it my all.”
Young completed the individual distance double on Tuesday winning the 1,500 in 5:10.71 and added a title in the 3,000 in an outdoor personal best time of 10:46.84.
“I’m running a lot faster than last year and that’s cool,” Young said. “I’m not exactly where I want to be yet but I think I’ll get there.”
Quillin won the 800 in 2:27.41 and Sophia Stahle won the 200 in 26.18.
Federspiel won the 400 in a time of 57.86.
“She has dropped some crazy times,” Brimeyer said of Federspiel. “She is dropping crazy times in everything she runs and is well ahead of where she was last year at this time.”
Abigail Felton was runner-up in the discus, Aisley Foster was runner-up in the long jump and Lilly Towne was runner-up in the high jump as Solon double scored in three of the four field events.
Mia Stahle was runner-up in the 100, 100 hurdles and 400 hurdles and Kobi Lietz was second in the 400.
Solon was second in the sprint medley, distance medley and 4×200 relays. “
“It’s really nice to have so many girls to put into events,” Brimeyer said. “We have a lot of girls that we can rely on to step in when they need to.”
