West Branch stopped a few unenviable state meet streaks last season.
With two state qualifiers a year ago the Bears had a state qualifier for the first time since 2016 , multiple wrestlers at the state meet for the first time since 2014 and left Des Moines with the program’s first state win and state medal since 2016.
It appears that was just the start of the postseason success for West Branch.
West Branch crowned a pair of champions and qualified six wrestlers for the state meet on Saturday in a runner-up team finish at the Class 1A, District 12 meet at Wilton High School.
Returning state medalist Logan Wright and freshman Cooper Gates each won district titles as West Branch finished runner-up to third-ranked Wilton with 162 points.
The host Beavers crowned nine champions and won the team title with 232.5 points.
Fourth-ranked Wright (37-3) won the 220-pound title with a 9-4 win over seventh-ranked Jack Hiland of Bellevue in the championship match.
Gates (34-4) went 3-0 with a pair of pins on his way to the 152-pound title.
No. 12 Gates pinned Mediapolis freshman Kyler Crow in 2:50 in the championship match.
Timmy Hosier, Lincoln Edwards, Logan Christoffel and Cale Seydel all earned spots at the Class 1A state meet scheduled for February 15-18 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with runner-up finishes on Saturday.
Timmy Hosier (14-12) was runner-up at 113 pounds falling to seventh-ranked Austin Etzel of Wilton in the title match.
Fourth-ranked Edwards (38-6) was runner-up at 120 pounds dropping an 11-0 major decision to sixth-ranked Gabriel Brisker of Wilton in the final.
