IOWA CITY – The River Valley Conference South Division opener for Regina on Tuesday wasn’t exactly a thing of beauty.
It wasn’t smooth offensively and it wasn’t always pretty.
Drew Streb knows exactly what Tuesday’s meeting with South Division foe was.
“It’s a win,” Streb said. “A win is a win. We are just trying to get wins, that’s pretty much all we are trying to do it doesn’t matter how.”
Regina shot just 32 percent from the field and didn’t score more than 15 points in a quarter but used a strong defensive effort and a double-double from Streb to earn a 42-40 win over Durant in Iowa City.
Streb scored 14 points and grabbed 13 rebounds and Regina forced turnovers on the final two Durant possessions to preserve the win.
The win was the 14th in a row for Regina over Durant and improved the Regals to 2-2 on the season.
Coming off a six-win season a year ago the 2-2 start is a sign of good things for Regina.
“It’s just so fun getting wins,” Streb said. “We are having fun and we want to take it one game at a time.”
On a night when shots weren’t falling Regina found a way to win.
The Regals held Durant leading scorer Garrett Hollenback who entered averaging 18.5 points per game to just four points on 2-of-8 shooting.
“We a bunch ran guys in on him and they did a good job,” Regina coach Barry Lehman said. “We buckled down and played defense.”
Regina held Durant scoreless in the second quarter, limited the Wildcats to 34 percent shooting for the game and forced 16 turnovers.
“Most of our games our main preparation is on defense,” Streb said. “We know we need to box out and rebound and get out in transition and get some easy baskets.”
Durant closed the first quarter on a 13-2 run to take a 13-8 lead.
Regina returned the favor with a 9-0 run that spanned the entire second quarter.
Durant missed all 11 second-quarter field goal attempts as Regina built a 17-13 halftime lead.
“Our big focus was to take away their main scorers,” Streb said. “We wanted to take away DeLong and Hollenback and we just all tried to do our jobs. It’s a team sport, we all know what we are doing and we have that team chemistry, we’ve been playing together for a long time.”
Streb and fellow junior post player John Devery combined for 14 of 25 second-half points for Regina.
A putback by Streb with 3:34 remaining snapped a 38-all tie and gave Regina the lead for good. “John Devery and I, we work our high low as much as we can,” Streb said. “We’ve been doing it since junior high, it’s our favorite thing and we just love playing together and we know where the other is going to be.”
A pair of free throws by Eddie Petersen gave Regina a 42-38 lead with 2:53 left but the Regals wouldn’t score again.
Instead it was the Regal defense that sealed the deal.
Durant cut the lead to 42-40 on a basket by Hollenback with 46 seconds remaining but Regina forced two Wildcat turnovers in the final 40 seconds to secure the win.
Michael Martin had 14 points and seven rebounds for Regina while Petersen had six points and five rebounds.
Devery had six points and five rebounds.
“We dug in and played defense,” Lehman said. “We only had eight turnovers, we hit some shots when we had to but we played defense all game.”
