City High didn’t need to go far to find its next girls basketball coach.
Assistant coach Lynsey Barnard was announced as the new head coach at City High on Wednesday pending the approval of the school board.
Barnard has spent the past seven seasons as an assistant coach at City High including the last five as a varsity assistant.
She replaced Bill McTaggart who retired last month after winning 403 games in 23 seasons at City High that produced 12 trips to the state tournament.
“Under Lynsey’s leadership, City High girls basketball is certain to build on their success in the MVC and state of Iowa,” City High activities director Phillip Hansen said in a press release. “Lynsey’s passion for basketball and her ability to make meaningful connections with her student-athletes will allow City High girls basketball to continue to thrive.
Barnard played collegiately at Monmouth College and began her coaching career at Loras College before coming to City High.
She inherits a City High program that has been among the most successful large school programs in the state over the last two decades.
City High has reached the state tournament five of the past six seasons including a year ago when the Little Hawks posted a 19-5 record and advanced to the 5A quarterfinals.
