Defending 2A Champion West Branch Back in the Title Hunt After Opening Day at State Golf Meet

Last season the top three teams at the Class 2A state golf meet were separated by just two strokes.
It is shaping up to be an even tighter race for the title on Tuesday.
Just five strokes separated the top five teams after the opening round of action at the Class 2A state tournament on Monday at Coldwater Golf Links in Ames.
Several of the teams that were in the title race last season were back in the thick of things on Monday.
Defending 2A champion West Branch is fourth after an opening round 313 which is four strokes off the lead.
Hudson and Dyersville Beckman each opened with a 309 on Monday and are tied for the lead with Des Moines Christian two strokes back at 311.
Western Christian sits in fifth after an opening round 314 while Boyden-Hull is sixth with a 316.
All eight teams shot a 321 or better on Monday’s opening round with defending 2A runner-up Grundy Center carding a 320 and Osage a 321.
West Branch junior Will Bridges shot a five-over-par 76 to lead the Bears and sits in a four-way tie for 10th place after one round.
Bridges shot a 38 on both the front and back nine on Monday finishing with a birdie and six bogeys.
Seniors Brady Knoop and Dylan Country each shot a six-over-par 77 on Monday and are in a five-way tie for 14th.
Gage Gingerich finished with an 83 for West Branch while Cameron Gingerich shot a 90 and Logan Highly a 91.
Regina junior Mikey Takacs closed with a 37 on the back nine after opening with a 38 on his way to a four-over-par 75 that puts him in a tie for eighth-place with Grundy Center senior Ashton Martens.
Takacs is six strokes back of individual leader Jake Weissenburger of Des Moines Christian who had four of his six opening-round birdies in a 31 on the back nine and leads the way with a 69.
