On a busy weekend in which Solon qualified 11 events for the Drake Relays the Spartans saved their best performance for last.

Solon capped a strong weekend by edging defending champion Ames to win the 4×400 relay in the final prep event on Saturday afternoon at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

The Solon foursome of Meghan O’Neill, Kaia Holtkamp, Grace Federspiel and Emma Bock won in a time of 3:56.24 to just edge Ames which was runner-up in 3:56.57.

City High was third in 4:01.16.

The 4×400 put an exclamation point on a strong day for Solon relays after the Spartans finished third in the 4×800 and were fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay on Saturday.

Solon was 15^th at the Drake Relays in the 4×400 last season and entered with the fourth fastest time in the state this season at 402.04.

The Spartans were dominant on their way to the title.

Solon clocked the fastest time in 4×400 prelims on Friday evening with a season-best 3:55.44.

The Spartans were even better on Saturday.

Bock split a 57.02 anchor leg to lead Solon to its lone title of what was a strong weekend that ended with Solon in a tie for second in the Drake Relays high school girls cup standings with Waukee Northwest with 16 points.

Cedar Rapids Prairie won the cup title with 19 points.

The same Solon relay foursome finished third in 9:28.61 to start the day.

Solon also finished fifth in the shuttle hurdle relay as Mia Stahle, Calla Foster, Sophia Stahle and Aly Stahle clocked a time of 1:06.82.
