The 2022 Your Prep Sports Area Wrestling Team

The annual Your Prep Sports area wrestling team honors some of the top wrestlers in the area for their performance on the mat this season.
Once again some of the best wrestlers in the entire state competed in the Your Prep Sports area this season.
Two area wrestlers completed unbeaten seasons with their third consecutive state titles while 10 wrestlers from the Your Prep Sports area left Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines with a state medal.
West High senior Hunter Garvin and City High junior Ben Kueter are the captain for the 2022 team.
Garvin completed an incredible career with a third consecutive state title and second straight unbeaten season going 48-0 on his way to winning the 3A 152-pound title.
The Stanford recruit finished his career with a 136-7 record that included 100 career pins and won his final 78 high school matches.
Kueter remained unbeaten in his high school record going 37-0 on his way to the 3A 220-pound title.
The Iowa recruit had 20 pins and had just two matches go the entire three periods this season while pushing his career record to 70-0.
2022 Your Prep Sports Area Wrestling Team
106 – Cale Nash (36-11) Fr., Clear Creek Amana: Recorded 36 wins, won a WAMAC conference title and reached the state meet in his debut season.
113 – Lincoln Edwards (30-6) Soph., West Branch: Earned runner-up finishes at sectional and district meets before going 1-2 in his first ever trip to the Class 1A state meet.
120 – Cale Seaton (42-3) Soph., City High: Set single-season City High records for takedowns and match points in an impressive sophomore season that ended with a second consecutive third-place state finish.
126 – Kael Kurtz (38-6) Soph., City High: Earned a second consecutive state meet medal improving on a seventh-place finish as a freshman with a fourth-place performance last month.
132 – Kyler Scranton (27-16) Soph., West High: Went 1-2 in his first trip to the state tournament after finishing third at the MVC meet and runner-up at the district meet.
138 – Grant O’Dell (43-7) Sr., West High: A stalwart in the West High lineup the past four seasons O’Dell capped his career with his best state meet finish placing fourth to earn his fourth state medal.
145 – Robert Avila (14-2) Sr., West High: A three-time Class 1A state champion the Virginia recruit finished runner-up in his lone season in Class 3A capping an incredible career with a 145-3 record.
*152 – Hunter Garvin (48-0) Sr., West High: Stanford recruit showed why he is considered one of the top wrestlers in the country recording three pins and a major decision at the state meet on his way to a third consecutive state title and second straight unbeaten season.
160 – Kael Scranton (30-13) Sr., West High: Scranton earned his first ever state medal in his fourth appearance at the state meet going 3-2 on his way to a seventh-place finish.
170 – Aidan Udell (35-6) Sr., Regina: In his third trip to the state meet Udell earned a second career medal reaching the 1A semifinals for the first time before placing sixth.
182 – Vinny Lima (22-12) Soph., Liberty High: Notched third-place finishes at both the Mississippi Valley Conference and Class 3A district meets during a solid sophomore season.
195 – Ronan Poynton (35-7) Jr., Regina: Won sectional and district titles to return to the state meet for the second consecutive season where he went 1-2.
*220 – Ben Kueter (37-0) Jr., City High: The Iowa recruit remained unbeaten in his prep career while claiming a third consecutive state title and didn’t have a state tournament match last into the third period recording two tech falls and two pins.
285 – Gage Marty (48-3) Sr., Solon: Closed an impressive senior season with a runner-up state finish closing his career with three state meet medals at three different weight classes.
