WAMAC Conference Meet
When: Saturday, 10 a.m.
Where: Solon High School
Ranked teams: Class 2A No. 1 West Delaware; Class 2A No. 6 Vinton-Shellsburg
What to watch: The WAMAC Conference meet returns in full force in 2022 after a Monday evening rescheduled event in 2021 drew only seven conference teams.
Four-time defending team champion West Delaware is a heavy favorite to tack on another title to its recent string of WAMAC conference crowns.
The Hawks are ranked number one in Class 2A and have a 2A-leading nine ranked wrestlers.
Across the board the WAMAC field is as loaded as ever with talent.
All 14 weight classes have at least one ranked competitor with 10 classes boasting multiple ranked wrestlers.
Three weight classes (120, 138 and 170) have four ranked wrestlers and the meet will feature five wrestlers ranked number one at their respective weight.
Independence and Vinton-Shellsburg should battle for the runner-up spot behind West Delaware with the Mustangs depth an advantage in the team race.
Clear Creek Amana was third at the seven-team WAMAC meet last season and is led by freshman 106-pounder Cale Nash (17-5) who will look to make a splash in his conference meet debut.
A long-time WAMAC contender Solon gets home-mat advantage on Saturday and has a pair of ranked competitors in seniors Lucas Kampman (28-6) at 170 pounds and Gage Marty (37-2) at 285 pounds.
Keep an eye on Solon freshman Jordan Schmidt (32-14) who will look to make some noise in a strong 126-pound bracket that features top-ranked Jaiden Moore of Benton Community and 1A sixth-ranked Nick Schmidt of Dyersville Beckman.
Who to watch: Solon senior Gage Marty is already a two-time state medalist with sixth and seventh place finishes at the 2A state meet.
Marty showed the rest of the state last weekend what those at Solon have known since the start of the year – Marty is a serious title contender this season.
The senior 285-pounder won a 3-1 decision over top-ranked and previously unbeaten Iowa recruit Easton Fleshman in the finals of the Herb Irgens Invitational.
The win over Fleshman capped an impressive weekend for third-ranked Marty which also included a pin of sixth-ranked Nick Bronstad of Okoboji.
Marty (37-2) is wrestling as well as anyone in Class 2A of late and will attempt to add a WAMAC title to his senior season haul on Saturday.
Weight class to watch: The attention is always on the finals but wrestling fans will want to get settled in for the 170-pound semifinals on Saturday.
Four top-10 ranked wrestlers are in the 170-pound field including a trio of seniors ranked in the top seven in Class 2A.
Solon senior Lucas Kampman (28-6) is ranked seventh and joins fifth-ranked West Delaware senior Kyle Cole and sixth-ranked South Tama senior Boden Koehler along with ninth-ranked Independence junior Mitch Johnson in what may be the toughest bracket of the day.
Kampman lost his only match against the other ranked wrestlers in the bracket falling to Koehler via fall.
