Every coach wants a strong start to every game.
Clear Creek Amana first-year head coach Matt Haddy couldn’t have scripted a much better start to the Clippers homecoming tilt with Oskaloosa on Friday.
The Clippers jumped to a 14-0 lead in the opening 121 seconds and cruised to a 48-9 win over the Indians in the district opener for both teams at Clipper Field.
“You can’t draw it up much better than that,” Haddy said. “That really set the tone.”
Clear Creek Amana (4-1) jumped to its early two-touchdown lead without running an offensive play.
The Clippers forced Oskaloosa (4-1) to go three-and-out on the opening possession of the game after a tackle for loss on third-and-short.
Gage Freeman had the first of his two blocked punts and senior Grant Kruse scooped up the loose ball and returned it 13 yards for a touchdown less than two minutes into the game.
On the next Oskaloosa offensive play senior linebacker Ethan Pegump grabbed a fumble after a Oskaloosa screen pass and raced 25 yards for a score to put the Clippers up 14-0 with 9:59 left in the first quarter.
The strong start didn’t end there.
The first offensive possession of the game for Clear Creek Amana was a 3-play, 59-yard touchdown drive that ended with a 42 yard run by quarterback Ben Swails that gave CCA a 21-3 lead less than midway through the opening quarter.
“Just all three phases tonight were good and to me that’s complimentary football,” Haddy said. “That’s what we are striving for.”
Clear Creek Amana ran just seven offensive plays during a first quarter that ended with the Clippers leading 34-3.
A second blocked punt by Freeman that he returned himself 15 yards for a score made it 28-3 with 6:16 left in the quarter.
“Our whole team has bought into special teams so much,” Clear Creek Amana senior Tommy Morlan said. “We practice it all the time. Probably 30 percent of our practice is special teams.”
Reece Hoffman intercepted a pass on the ensuing possession and returned it 25 yards to set up a 4-play, 20-yard touchdown drive capped by an 8-yard pass from Swails to Harrison Rosenberg.
Oskaloosa actually outgained Clear Creek Amana 122 to 79 in the opening quarter but the Clippers held the Indians to a field goal inside the 10 yard line on one possession and took advantage of turned the two turnovers into points.
The nine points for Oskaloosa was the lowest scoring output for a Clear Creek Amana opponent this season.
“Where we are getting better is we are forcing teams to drive the field,” Haddy said. “We are not giving up big plays. That’s the area we are getting better at is keeping the ball in front of us and getting to the next play.”
