Taylor Cannon is staying home.

The Liberty High senior track standout verbally committed to the University of Iowa with a post on social media.

“I would like to announce that I have verbally committed to the University of Iowa to continue my academic and athletic track career,” Cannon wrote on Twitter. “Yes, I wanted to go out of state but I didn’t realize how good I had it in my own back yard and what’s better than being coached by the best?”

A two-time state runner-up in the 100 hurdles Cannon established herself as one of the top hurdlers in the state last season.

After finishing runner-up in the 100 hurdles in Class 3A as a sophomore, Cannon added a Class 4A runner-up finish to her resume last season.

Cannon posted a career-best time of 14.45 in the 100 hurdles in the state meet prelims as a junior which ranks as the 13th best time in program history.

The runner-up finish in the hurdles was the highlight to a strong state track meet for Cannon last May that included a pair of top-eight finishes in relays.

Cannon led the Liberty High shuttle hurdle relay team to a sixth-place finish and ran on the Lightning’s runner-up distance medley relay team.

Cannon was fourth at the Drake Relays in the 100 hurdles as a junior.
