West High Wins Seven Events While Rolling to Second Straight MVC Title

The championship season for high school swimming teams kicked off on Saturday with the Mississippi Valley Conference meet.
West High looked every bit like a program poised for a postseason run.
The Trojans won seven of 11 events and cruised to a second consecutive MVC title outdistancing runner-up Linn-Mar by 125 points at the Dubuque Community Schools Aquatic Center.
West High swept the relay events and got individual titles from James Pinter, Izaak Hajek and Diggory Dillingham while rolling up 471 points.
Linn-Mar was second with 346 followed by City High which placed third with 264 points behind big days from Isaac Weigel and Forrest Frazier.
Pinter was named Valley Division athlete of the year on Saturday after a performance that featured four first-place finishes.
The senior joined Frazier as the only two-event individual champions taking titles in the 200 freestyle (1:43.13) and 100 backstroke (51.7).
Hajek set a meet record winning the 100 butterfly in 50.76 while Dillingham edged teammates Michael Kimball and Kirk Brotherton to win the 50 freestyle in 21.73 as West High finished 1-2-3 in the event.
Pinter, Hajek and Dillingham joined Jordan Christensen to set a meet record in the 200 medley relay with a winning time of 1:34.75.
Dillingham was a part of all three winning relay teams for West High joining Brotherton, Kimball and Luke Nichols on the 200 freestyle squad that was victorious in 1:27.11.
Nichols, Hajek, Dillingham and Pinter won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:13.38.
Frazier posted a pair of individual titles and was on two runner-up relay teams for the Little Hawks while earning Mississippi Division athlete of the year honors.
The senior broke his own meet record while winning the 100 breaststroke in 56.26 and added a title in the 100 freestyle in 47.92.
Frazier joined Caleb Coons, Weigel and Bryce Edens to place second behind West High in the both the 200 medley relay (1:37) and 200 freestyle relay (1:29.02).
Weigel was runner-up in the 200 IM in 1:58.48 and Edens added a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle in 4:57.9.
West High coach Byron Butler was named Valley Division coach of the year while City High’s Zane Hugo earned coach of the year honors in the Mississippi Division.
