Wrestling Roundup: Taylor Wins Title in Top-two Matchup at Herb Irgens Invitational

Hayden Taylor won a battle of top-two ranked wrestlers to win the 145-pound title at the Herb Irgens Invitational on Saturday in Ida Grove.
Class 2A top-ranked Taylor (37-0) won a 5-3 decision over 1A second-ranked Cael Rahnavardi Don Bosco in the title match to cap a 4-0 performance at the two-day tournament that featured a pair of tech falls and a major decision to reach the championship.
The title from Taylor helped Solon to a fourth-place team finish at the 26-team tournament.
Class 1A top-ranked Don Bosco won the team title with 289 points followed by Sergeant Bluff-Luton with 172.5, Emmetsburg with 155 and Solon with 138.5.
Solon got runner-up finishes from Zeb Gnida at 152 pounds and Gage Marty at 195 on its way to its fourth-place finish.
Gnida (33-5) defeated 1A No. 3 Cael Frost of Don Bosco 3-1 in the semifinals before falling to 2A second-ranked Jack Gaukel of Sergeant Bluff-Luton 10-3 in the 152-pound title match.
Marty (29-8) dropped a 6-5 decision to Tate Hagen of West Hancock in the 195-pound championship.
Solon also got a fourth-place finish from Seamus Poynton at 182 at fifth-place finishes from Jax Flynn at 170 and Jakobe Lahr at 126.

Udell Leads Regina at John Byers Invite
Rowan Udell won an individual title to lead Regina at the John Byers Invitational on Saturday in Wyoming.
Class 1A fourth-ranked Udell earned a pair of first-period pins on his way to the 195-pound title improving his season record to 29-0.
The title from Udell helped Regina place seventh with 57 points.
Southeast Polk won the team title with 200.5 points followed by Wapello with 161 and host Midland with 140.5.
Aidan Udell added a runner-up finish at 160 pounds falling to Cayden Miller of Midland 8-4 in the title match.

West High Crowns Three Champions at Rick Caldwell Invitational
West High crowned three champions on its way to a third-place team finish at the Rick Caldwell Invitational on Saturday in Waverly.
Hunter Garvin, Graham Gambrall and Will Hoeft all earned individual titles as West High rolled up 198 points.
Waverly-Shell Rock won the team title with 268.5 points while Fort Dodge was second with 205 points.
Top-ranked Garvin won the 132-pound title with a first-period pin of Cael Holmgren of Waverly-Shell Rock.
Class 2A No. 4 Graham Gambrall won the 145-pound championship with a 4-2 sudden victory win over seventh-ranked Brandon Mills of Fort Dodge.
Second-ranked Will Hoeft earned an 11-3 decision over No. 6 Taner Harvey of Boone in the 182-pound championship match.
Grant O’Dell (106), Parker McBride (120), Ashton Barker (170) and Brett Pelfrey (220) all added runner-up finishes for West High.
