Alumni News is a way for readers to keep tabs on former area standouts as well as honoring those athletes that continue to excel at the next level.
Austin West
West High graduate Austin West finished third in the decathlon at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Champaign, Illinois over the weekend helping Iowa claim its second consecutive Big Ten title.
West racked up a career-best 7,805 points, the second most in program history behind Will Daniels who set a new school record with 7,864 points in a runner-up finish.
During his third-place performance West had career-best performances in the 110 hurdles, 100, discus, long jump, shot put, 400 and 1,500.
Adam Bock
Solon graduate Adam Bock led South Dakota State in tackles in the FCS National Title Game Saturday as the Jackrabbits fell to Sam Houston State 23-21 in Frisco, Texas.
A freshman linebacker for South Dakota State, Bock had eight tackles, including four solo stops and finished the season as the teams top tackler with 74 stops in 10 games including 5.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.
Brandon McCarty
Clear Creek Amana graduate Brandon McCarty helped Kirkwood Community College claim its sixth consecutive regional title with an 11th place finish at the Region XI Meet at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course in Riverside.
A freshman at Kirkwood, McCarty posted three consecutive rounds of 79 to finish with a three-day score of 237
McCarty and the Eagles will compete at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament May 18-21 at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Indiana.
