Breakdown: Madrid pulled away from the field to win its first title since 1965 last season and will attempt to repeat this season following the footprint of Nodaway Valley which had its string of three consecutive titles end last fall.
With three of its top four runners from last season returning top-ranked Madrid is the favorite though Nodaway Valley should never be counted out and defending runner-up Calamus-Wheatland could push behind standout junior Chase Knoche who is ranked fourth.
Calamus-Wheatland brings back four of its top five finishers from last years’ squad that 48 points behind Madrid.
Nodaway Valley senior Joshua Baudler will seek to go out a state champion after finishing runner-up last season but will be pushed by LeMars Gehlen senior Will Roder who was third a year ago, Knoche and third-ranked Jason Renze of Madrid.
Regina freshman Joe Maley will make his state meet debut as an individual qualifier.

Ranked area individuals: 25. Annalee Bartels, Jr., Regina
Breakdown: In its return to Class 1A Regina matched its best state meet showing since 2011 with a runner-up finish.
The Regals return three of their top five finishers from last year’s runner-up squad that finished 62 points behind champion and 2019 favorite Logan-Magnolia.
Junior Annalee Bartels headlines the list of returning Regals after a fifth-place finish last season in her first state meet appearance.
Bartels enters ranked 25th in Class 1A but demonstrated last season she has the ability to run at the front of the state meet pack.
Josie Voss, Kennedy Scott and Josie Pursley all return with state meet experience for the Regals while freshman Mya Whitaker has stepped into the lineup and was 10th at the state qualifying meet.
With its top six returning intact defending champion Logan-Magnolia is a heavy favorite in 1A but there should be a battle for the final two spots on the balcony in Fort Dodge.
Second-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg, Kee and Regina should all be in the mix for a top-three finish.
Tri-Center junior Peyton Pogge and Aplington-Parkersburg senior Sophia Jungling expect to battle for the individual title.
Pogge was runner-up in 1A last season.
