Bartels Earns First Win at State Qualifier as Regina Claims Team Title

In two seasons of varsity cross country Annalee Bartels has built a reputation for coming up with her best performances in the biggest moments.
The higher the stakes, the faster Bartels seems to run.
In her debut season a year ago Bartels was runner-up at the state qualifying meet before a fifth-place finish at the state meet.
That trend continued for Bartels on Thursday at the Class 1A state qualifier at Kickers Soccer Complex in Iowa City.
Bartels claimed her first career win in a time of 20:48.01 as 1A fifth-ranked Regina won a state qualifier at its home course for the second consecutive season.
“I think the last 100 stretch it finally hit me that is going to be the first race I have ever won,” Bartels said. “It felt really good, it was really cool.”
Bartels took more than 22 seconds off the time from her state qualifier runner-up finish last season on the same course on Thursday as she finished two seconds in front of Pekin sophomore Lauren Derscheid for the top spot.
“I felt strong and I knew I could get (Dersheid) eventually and if I can’t then I’m fine,” Bartels said. “I just did what my body felt like and at the end I was like ‘you can go, you got this’ I felt so good. My body was feeling good my mind was feeling good.”
Bartels led a trio of Regals in the top 10 as Regina had four runners finish in the top 12 on Thursday.
Sophomore Josie Voss was fourth in 21:14.83 while freshman Mya Whitaker was 19th in 21:24.35.
Senior Kennedy Scott added a 12th place finish in 21:30.14.
“This is our home course and our strategy was just to run our best, try to get top 15 and just keep pushing people off,” Bartels said.
Regina finished with 60 points, 29 in front of six-ranked Pekin. Prince of Peace was third with 117 points.
In the boys race Regina freshman Joe Maley secured a spot at the state meet with a eighth-place finish in 17:46.98.
Regina finished one spot away from a spot at state, placing fourth with 136.
Calamus-Wheatland won the team title with 51 points followed by Pekin with 75 and Maquoketa Valley with 87.
