Volleyball Roundup: Liberty High Finishes Regular Season 32-2 After Reaching MVC Semfinals

Liberty High closed the regular season 32-2 after a 4-1 performance at the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament on Saturday in Cedar Rapids that ended with a semifinal loss to top-ranked Cedar Falls.
The Lightning went 3-0 in pool play and defeated Cedar Rapids Jefferson in the quarterfinals before having a program-record 19-match winning streak snapped with a 25-14, 25-13 semifinal loss to Cedar Falls.
Class 5A second-ranked Liberty High didn’t drop a set in pool play wins over Linn-Mar (21-14, 21-16), Waterloo East (21-13, 21-11) and Western Dubuque (21-8, 21-17) and defeated Cedar Rapids Jefferson 25-14, 25-11 in the quarterfinals.
Freshman Cassidy Hartman led Liberty High with 25 kills on Saturday and added five ace serves in the five matches.
Shelby Kimm had 24 kills and four blocks while LeeAnn Potter had 19 kills and 25 digs for the Lightning.
Sydney Woods had 18 kills and four ace serves, Lauren Roman had seven kills and four blocks and Rylee Fay had 17 kills, 16 ace serves, 56 assists and 16 digs.
Addie Schmierer had a team-high 36 digs while Woods added 32 digs and Hailey Hested had 29 assists, 11 digs and four ace serves.
5A No. 12 City High had its own strong showing on Saturday winning its pool before falling to host Cedar Rapids Prairie in the quarterfinals.
City High defeated No. 13 Dubuque Hempstead (24-22, 21-11) and Cedar Rapids Washington (21-6, 21-11) and fell to 4A No. 3 Dubuque Wahlert (21-13, 16-21, 15-11) in pool play.
The Little Hawks dropped a 26-24, 25-23 thriller to Cedar Rapids Prairie in the quarterfinals.
Kelsey Law led City High with 38 kills and six ace serves while Mia Loughran added 13 kills and 22 digs.
Lindsey Bolton had 74 assists and 22 digs and Brooke Bormann had 21 digs.
