PELLA – After watching his team fail to score against Class 3A power Cedar Rapids Xavier in the season opener two weeks ago, Regina coach Marv Cook still was optimistic about his offense.
And now we know why.
The Regals pounded Pella Christian 45-13 on Friday on the road and have combined to score 101 points in the last two games while improving to 2-1 on the season.
Junior quarterback Ashton Cook, who is Marv Cook’s son, led the way on Friday with 250 passing yards and 81 rushing yards.
Cook threw three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores as the Regals continued to show improvement on offense since losing to Xavier 35-0 in the season opener.
Junior receiver Alec Wick caught all three of Cook’s touchdown passes and finished with seven catches for 227 yards. Wick scored on passes covering 44, 61 and 64 yards.
“On offense we made enough big plays and Alec Wick was spectacular tonight and helped lead our offense,” Marv Cook said.
Marv Cook was also pleased with his team’s performance on special teams and on defense.
Jack Goedken blocked a punt in the second quarter that was recovered by Levi Quinlan who then returned it for a touchdown, expanding Regina’s lead to 28-0.
Michal Dunn also made a 38-yard field goal for Regina in the fourth quarter.
“Had plenty of leg for that, so we like where our special teams are at,” Marv Cook said. “We had good coverage.”
Pella Christian scored on a pass play right before halftime in which the receiver and defender both had their hands on the ball. Pella Christian’s second touchdown came late in the fourth quarter with the outcome already decided.
Aiden Udell led Regina with 10 tackles and Theo Kolie had a sack.
“Defensively, I thought we did a great job for the most part,” Marv Cook said. “They scored on a jump ball right before the half and then they scored late.
“I thought defensively we were really sound.”
