Liberty High entered the season feeling it was a state tournament caliber team.
The Lightning didn’t waste any time showing why they felt that way.
Class 5A No. 12 Liberty High opened the season with a five-set win over Class 4A second-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier on Tuesday in a Mississippi Valley Conference cross-divisional match in Cedar Rapids.
Liberty High claimed the final two sets to earn a 20-25, 25-16, 15-25, 25-12 win over the Saints in the season opener for both teams.
Freshman Shelby Kimm had a team-high 12 kills to lead a balanced Liberty High attack that feature four players with at least six kills.
LeeAnn Potter and Cassidy Hartmann each had nine kills and Sydney Woods added six for the Lightning while Sam Harvey and Lauren Roman each chipped in with four.
Hailey Hested and Rylee Fay each had 22 assists and Addie Schmmierer had a team-high 24 digs.
Hested and Potter each had 11 digs and three assists while Potter and Roman each had three blocks.
