City High Downs Johnston For Third-Place State Softball Finish

For the second year in a row City High closed the season on a high note.
This time that meant a program-best third-place finish at the Class 5A state tournament at Harlan Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge.
Sixth-ranked City High snapped a 2-2 tie with a four-run fifth inning in a 6-3 win over fifth-ranked Johnson (35-10) in the Class 5A consolation contest on Friday.
The third-place finish for City High (36-8) is the best in program history and comes after the Little Hawks went 1-1 at the state tournament last season in its first appearance since 2001.
Ayana Lindsey allowed three runs on four hits in a six-inning complete game win and City High homered twice while bouncing back from a 4-2 semifinal loss to West Des Moines Dowling on Wednesday.
City High took an early lead on a solo homerun by junior Keli Potter in the second inning.
After leading Class 5A with 54 home runs during the regular season the home run by Potter was the first of the state tournament for the Little Hawks.
City High took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Sydney Fellows doubled and scored on a Johnston error.
The Dragons tied the game with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with the second coming on a solo home run by Hannah Hughes.
City High pulled away with four runs in the fifth.
Ayana Lindsey started the four-run fourth with a walk and scored on an RBI double by Ella Cook.
A two-run home run by Carey Koenig, her 13th of the season, gave City High a 5-2 lead.
Fellows followed with a double and scored on a Brooke Bormann RBI single.
Seven different Little Hawks had a hit in the win led by Fellows who went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
Koenig homered and drove in two runs while Bormann, Potter and Cook all had hits and drove in runs.
Brianna Bentler and Alexa Fredericks each added hits for the Little Hawks.
