Boys Soccer Roundup: City High, West High Roll in 3A Substate Semifinals

Second-Ranked West High rolled into the Class 3A Substate 6 title game with a 7-0 win over Davenport Central on Wednesday at Barker Field in Iowa City.
West High improved to 15-1 with its 15th consecutive win and moved a win away from a fourth consecutive state tournament berth.
The Trojans will host Mississippi Valley Conference rival Cedar Rapids Jefferson (9-5-1) on Saturday in the Substate 6 title game at Noon at Barker Field.
Marko Migambi, Gada Ambo and Tomas Sanchez scored goals in the first half as West High built a 3-0 halftime lead.
Brody Schilling, Miguel Cohen Suarez and Micah Frisbie all had second-half goals in the win.
City High Rolls in Substate Semifinal
City High scored a minute into the match and cruised to a 9-0 win over Muscatine on Wednesday in a Class 3A, Substate 8 semifinal at the University of Iowa Soccer Complex in Iowa City.
Seventh-ranked City High improved to 12-3 with the win and will host No. 11 Cedar Rapids Washington (12-3) in the Substate 8 title game on Noon at the University of Iowa Soccer Complex.
Cedar Rapids Washington has won seven in a row after a 10-0 semifinal win over Davenport North on Wednesday, a stretch that includes a 2-0 win over City High on May 14.
Liberty Moves On
In its second year as a varsity program Liberty High has taken things one step further.
After reaching the substate semifinals last season the Lightning advanced to the substate title game for the first time in program history with a 4-3 win at Mount Pleasant in a Class 2A, Substate 5 semifinal on Wednesday afternoon.
Mount Pleasant lit the scoreboard first in the 18th minute, but the Lightning struck back less than three minutes later with a goal from Kolby Godbolt. A score by Ayi Ajavon gave Liberty the lead, and Faraja Kosongo added one more to give the Bolts a 3-1 halftime lead.
Kosongo added an insurance goal less than four minutes into the second half, which proved to be crucial in the one goal win.
Liberty High improved to 7-10 with the win and will face 2A top-ranked Cedar Rapids Xavier (13-2) on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Cedar Rapids.
Clear Creek Amana Drops Heartbreaker
Class 2A No. 13 Clear Creek Amana dropped a heartbreaker at No. 10 Dubuque Wahlert on Wednesday falling 5-4 in penalty kicks are 100 minutes of soccer failed to produce a goal for either side.
The loss snapped a four-match winning streak for Clear Creek Amana and ended the Clippers season at 12-4.
Dubuque Wahlert (11-5) will face No. 2 Marion (16-0) on Saturday in the Class 2A, Substate 4 title match.
Prior to Wednesday Clear Creek Amana had been 7-0 in matches decided by one goal this season.
Regina Returns to Substate Final
Class 1A second-ranked Regina returned to the substate final with a 2-0 win over Williamsburg on Wednesday afternoon at Regal Field.
Kieler Brown broke the scoreless tie in the 28th minute, heading a Leo Gasparoni pass into the goal.
Archie Chiu buried a rebound in the net to give Regina the two goal lead late in the second half.
Two-time defending 1A champion Regina improved to 14-6 on the season and will host sixth-ranked South Tama (14-5) in a Class 1A, Substate 4 final on Saturday at Noon.
