Regina Posts Second Top-Three Finish in Three Seasons, Placing Third at 1A State Meet

FORT DODGE – Regina returned to the balcony at Lakeside Golf Course in Fort Dodge for the second time in three seasons on Saturday.
This time the Regals did it by the slimmest of margins.
Regina placed third at the Class 1A state cross country meet on Saturday winning a tiebreaker over Pekin to earn a team trophy and a coveted spot on the balcony of the clubhouse at Lakeside Golf Course.
Third-ranked Regina finished in a tie with second-ranked Pekin with 161 points but won the tiebreaker of the Panthers via a better finish from its sixth-place runner.
Top-ranked Hudson edged South Winneshiek by two points to win the team title with 128 points.
Regina was runner-up in 2018 and placed fifth last season.
On Saturday the Regals put two runners in the top 20 of the team scorers on its way to the third-place finish.
Senior Annalee Bartels was ninth among team finishers and 17th overall in a time of 20:32.6 while sophomore Mya Whitaker was 20th in team finishers and 31st overall in 21:05.7.
Regina held the tiebreaker over Pekin as freshman Keira Sickels placed 72nd while the sixth finisher for the Panthers was 75th.
Juniors Natalie Franklin, Josie Pursley and Allison Hein finished 38th, 39th and 55th amongst team finishers for Regina.
Last year’s runner-up Haley Meyer of Kee won the individual title in 19:11.3 while Billie Wagner of South Winneshiek was second in 19:19.8.
Jalyssa Blazek of Turkey Valley was third in a time of 19:30.5.
