Solon Rolls Past South Tama for Second Straight Road Win

Last week Solon got its running game rolling while snapping a two-game losing skid with a rout of Union.
On Friday the Spartans had their offense firing on all cylinders in a second straight impressive win.
Sophomore quarterback Blake Timmons threw for 154 yards and three touchdowns as Solon rolled up a season-high 429 yards of total offense in a 42-7 win over South Tama (2-2, 1-1) in a Class 2A, District 6 matchup in Tama.
The breakthrough for the Solon offense came last week when the Spartans rushed for 405 yards in a 42-0 win over Union.
Solon had similar success in the run game on Friday, piling up 275 yards on the ground, but was equally efficient through the air while improving to 2-2 on the season and 2-0 in District 6 play.
Timmons completed 8-of-13 passes and tossed scoring strikes of 19, 39 and 45 yards as Solon snapped an early 7-all tie with 35 unanswered points to close the game.
Colton Hoffman caught touchdown passes of 39 and 45 yards and Carson Miller had a 19-yard touchdown grab.
Hoffman had a team-high five receptions for 121 yards and also had six tackles including a tackle for loss for a Solon defense that didn’t allow a touchdown.
Three different Spartans had more than 70 yards rushing and a touchdown as the Spartans rolled up 275 yards on the ground while averaging 7.1 yards per carry.
Timmons ran for 73 yards and a touchdown, senior tailback Jackson Ryan had 97 yards and a score and junior Hayden Taylor added 88 yards and a score.
Ryan gave Solon an early 7-0 lead with a 1-yard touchdown run.
South Tama evened the score when senior Payton Vest returned the ensuing kickoff 90 yards for a score.
Solon took the lead back on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Timmons to Miller and led 20-7 at halftime after Hoffman and Timmons hooked up for a 39-yard scoring strike.
Timmons and Taylor had touchdown runs in the second half and Hoffman caught a 45-yard touchdown pass from Timmons.
Senior linebacker Carson Shive led Solon with eight tackles while Gage Marty had a pair of tackles for loss and Ben Cusick and Austin Quaintance each had a sack.
Solon returns home next week to host Vinton-Shellsburg (1-3, 0-2) who fell to Mount Vernon on Friday 21-13.
