Clear Creek Amana Earns First State Tournament Trip With Upset of Top-ranked Davenport Assumption

DAVENPORT – What do you do for an encore after completing a season sweep of your rival with a one-run win in a substate semifinal?
If you are Clear Creek Amana you knock off the top-ranked team in the state on the road to secure the first ever state tournament trip in program history.
That was the scenario for the Clippers on Wednesday as Clear Creek Amana completed a memorable three-day stretch with a 12-3 win over No. 1 Davenport Assumption in the Class 3A, Substate 5 title game at Modern Woodman Park in Davenport.
The win came after Clear Creek Amana held off Solon 8-7 in a substate semifinal on Monday and sends the Clippers into the Class 3A state tournament for the first time ever.
Clear Creek Amana (16-5) will play on Tuesday at Principal Park in Des Moines against an opponent that will be announced after the seeding meeting on Thursday morning.
Davenport (20-5) had a five-game winning streak and three-year state tournament streak end with its first loss to a Class 3A opponent this season.
The Knights were a state semifinalist a year ago after winning back-to-back 3A titles in 2017 and 2018.
On Wednesday it was Clear Creek Amana that looked like a title contender.
The Clippers scored nine unanswered runs over the final four innings while turning a 3-all tie into a convincing win.
Clear Creek Amana batted around twice, sending nine to the plate in a three-run fourth inning that gave the Clippers the lead for good and in its five-run seventh that put an exclamation point on the win.
Ben Swails got the Clippers off to a strong start with a two-run single to left in the top of the first inning.
Assumption tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning but Swails put the Clippers back up by a run with a sacrifice fly that scored Grant Jensen who drew a leadoff walk.
The Knights pulled even again at 3-3 but Clear Creek Amana took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth.
Parker Smith and and Brock Reade led off the third inning with back-to-back singles.
TJ Bollers plated Smith with an infield ground ball and Readed scored on an error. After a Swails single the Clippers added another run on a wild pitch to take a 6-3 lead.
Smith and Swails each had three hits to lead an 11-hit Clipper attack and Swails drove in four runs.
Bollers added two hits and drove in two runs for the Clippers.
Clear Creek Amana took advantage of six walks and five hit by pitches from Assumption pitchers while getting 5 1/3 strong innings from Ogden.
Ogden picked up the win allowing three runs on five hits while striking out four and walking one.
Cade Armstrong worked 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to close out the win.
