For the second time in three seasons Solon came up one win shy of a state dual title.
Solon reached the Class 2A title match for the second time in three seasons on Wednesday but settled for a runner-up finish falling to top-ranked West Delaware 45-12 in a rematch of a WAMAC regular season match.
Second-ranked Solon closed the dual season with an impressive 29-2 record after rolling to the title match with impressive wins over Independence and Osage.
The runner-up finish comes after the Spartans were second in 2017, falling to New Hampton in the title match and sixth at the state dual meet a season ago.
Solon opened the day by winning 10 matches in a 51-21 quarterfinal victory over WAMAC rival Independence.
Seven of the 10 Solon wins came via pin as Solon cruised into the semifinals.
The match of the quarterfinal win was at 152 pounds where Solon senior Zack Bevans avenged two regular season losses with a 5-3 decision over seventh-ranked Matthew Doyle of Independence.
The Spartans had five pins among its 10 victories in a 48-22 win over Osage in the semifinals.
Johnny Hoyle (126), Bevans (152), Seamus Poynton (182), Mike Hoyle (220) and Michael Broghammer all produced pins in the semifinal win.
In the title match West Delaware (20-2) opened with three consecutive wins to take a 14-0 lead and Solon could never get back into it.
Bevans won a 4-2 decision over Jared Voss at 160 pounds to complete a 3-0 day and cut the lead to 14-3 but Wesrt Delaware won three of the next four matches to take control.
Hoyle, Jax Flynn and third-ranked freshman 126-pound Hayden Taylor each earned wins in the championship loss.
