Baseball Roundup: City High Uses Late Rally to Sneak by Cedar Rapids Jefferson

City High had all sorts of trouble getting its bats going in its postseason opener against Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
Until it mattered most.
City High (10-8) scored three runs in the seventh inning to rally past Cedar Rapids Jefferson 3-2 in a Class 4A, Substate 6 opener on Friday at Mercer Park in Iowa City.
The Little Hawks had three of its seven hits in the three-run seventh inning that sent City High into the Substate 6 title game.
City High will face the winner of Monday Substate 6 semifinal between Cedar Rapids Washington and Linn-Mar on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Mercer Park.
Cedar Rapids Jefferson (2-15) scored single runs in the first and fifth inning and didn’t let the Little Hawks get anything going on offense.
Jefferson starter Josiah Szabo held City High to just five hits and struck out four in six scoreless innings.
City High finally got going when it needed to most.
Reese Hayden and Noah Kabat started the seventh inning with back-to-back singles and Garrett Bormann advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt.
Hayden scored on a balk to cut the lead to 2-1 and Carter Seaton tied the game 2-2 with an RBI double that plated Kabat.
Following an intentional walk to Gable Mitchell the Little Hawks scored the game-winning run on a fly ball to center field by Joey Schnoebelen.
Seaton went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI to lead City High while Kabat and Hayden each had a hit and scored a run.
Joaquin Sanders and Jacob Means added singles for City High.
Hayden picked up the win working two scoreless innings of relief after Cade Obermueller allowed two runs on two hits while striking out six in five innings.
