Solon Crowns Three Champions at WAMAC Meet

For the second consecutive season Mike Hoyle won an individual title to help Solon to a runner-up finish at the WAMAC Conference meet.
On Saturday Hoyle had some company atop the podium.
Class 2A sixth-ranked Solon crowned three individual champions on Saturday and finished runner-up to West Delaware for the second year in a row at the WAMAC Meet at Benton Community High School in Van Horne.
Freshman Hayden Taylor and senior Zack Bevans each won their first individual WAMAC titles to go with the repeat championship from Hoyle as the Spartans finished with 220 points.
Class 2A second-ranked West Delaware had just one individual champ but had six wrestlers earn runner-up finishes and three more place third while rolling up 274.5 points.
Williamsburg placed third with 170 points followed by Independence with 155.5 and South Tama with 140.5.
Clear Creek Amana got a runner-up finish from Andrew Rohret (38-7) at 145 pounds and third-place finishes from Kael Scranton at 120 and Samual Stevens at 126 while placing 10th with 70 points.
Solon went 3-1 in title matches on Saturday.
Taylor (42-2) started the strong championship showing for the Spartans with a 26-12 major decision of Benton Community junior Wyatt Bieschke in the 126-pound title match.
Class 2A third-ranked Taylor reached the title match with consecutive pins and rank this winning streak to eight with the finals win.
Bevans (39-5) ran his own winning streak to 16 straight with a 3-0 performance on Saturday en route to the 152-pound title.
The sixth-ranked senior earned his second win of the month over No. 7 Scott Betterton of Vinton-Shellsburg with a 5-1 victory in the championship match.
A year after winning his first WAMAC title at 182 pounds Hoyle (38-1) pinned his way to the 220-pound title on Saturday.
The third-ranked 220-pounder in 2A, Hoyle needed just 40 seconds to pin Williamsburg junior Billy Grout in the championship.
Solon had half of its 14 wrestlers finish in the top three as Seamus Poynton added a runner-up finish at 182 pounds and Zeb Gnida, Andy Brokaw and Jax Flynn all finished third.
Poynton (33-8) dropped a 5-2 decision to sixth-ranked Jack Neuhaus of West Delaware in the 182-pound championship.
