As the on-field leader of the West High defense Cole Mabry has a lot on his mind when he takes the football field.

One thing the West High senior safety won’t have to worry about this fall is his future.

Mabry solidified his college plans before the start of his final prep season announcing his commitment to Army Sunday afternoon on Twitter.

“I am honored to announce my commitment to the United States Military Academy at West Point,” Mabry wrote on Twitter. I am so grateful for the coaches at Army who have given me this opportunity. I believe I have lived the American Dream, and this national and our underlying principles are something that I am willing to defend.”

The 6-foot-2, 190-pound Mabry is listed as a three-star linebacker by 247Sports which ranks his as the 10th best 2019 prospect in Iowa and also held an offer from Iowa State.

A two-year starter Mabry has been a defensive stalwart on back-to-back Class 4A runner-up teams at West High.

He played all over the field for the Trojans the past two seasons lining up in the secondary, at linebacker as well as at the line of scrimmage.

Mabry has ranked second on the team in tackles each of the past two seasons while helping West High to a 22-4 mark during that span.

Last season Mabry had a team-high 31 solo tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks among his 56.5 total tackles.

He also picked off a pass, recovered a fumble and rushed three times for 39 yards and three touchdowns.

Mabry enters his senior season with 124 career tackles and will be a key part of a West High defense that must replace four of its top five tacklers from a season ago.

A three-sport athlete, Mabry was a member of the West High boys basketball team that finishes as 4A runner-up and was a part of the Trojans track that that placed second at the 4A state meet.
