Baseball Roundup: Regina Sweeps West Branch in RVC South Showdown

Regina didn’t lock up a River Valley Conference South Division title on Thursday but the Regals took another step toward that goal with two wins over a familiar foe.
Class 2A third-ranked Regina swept rival West Branch in an RVC doubleheader on Thursday in West Branch.
Regina (19-7) won the opener 7-1 and took the nightcap 15-3 to improve to 13-2 in RVC play and remains one game up on Wilton (11-3) in the loss column with three games to play.
West Branch dropped to 7-13 on the season and 5-11 in conference play with the loss.
Jake Phillips earned the win in the opener allowing one run on five hits while striking out seven in a complete game.
Ryan Schott went 2-for-4 with a home run and Ryne Schooley was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs to lead Regina.
Trent Hoogerwerf had two hits and drove in a run and Phillips had a hit and two RBI in the win.
Ted Bridges took the loss for West Branch allowing seven runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Trey Eagle went 3-for-3 to lead West Branch.
Schooley and Evan Suchomel each had three hits in the nightcap as Regina pounded out 13 hits as a team.
Mitch Gahan homered, doubled and drove in three runs while Nick Brandt and Hoogerwerf each had a hit and drove in two runs.
Masen Miller was 2-for-3 and scored three runs and Suchomel scored three times for Regina.
Alex Meister earned the win for Regina allowing two runs on three hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Eagle took the loss for Regina allowing four runs on four hits in three innings.
Brady Lukavsky and Bridges each went 2-for-3 with a double. Lukavsky had two RBI and Eagle drove in a run for the Bears.

Liberty High Rally Comes up Short at Wahlert
Liberty High scored three runs over the final two innings but couldn’t overcome an early 8-2 hold in an 8-5 loss to Dubuque Wahlert at Petrakis Park in Dubuque on Thursday.
Dubuque Wahlert improved to 16-12 on the season while Liberty High dropped to 8-15 with the loss.
Cayden Duhaime took the loss for Liberty High allowing eight runs on six hits in three innings.
Cade Maras, Isaiah Pihl and Tyler White each worked a scoreless inning of relief for the Lightning.
Nolan Frey went 3-for-4 with a double for Liberty High while Tyler Dahm and White each had a hit and scored a run.
Frey, White, Ethan O’Donnell and Jacob Norris all drove in a run for Liberty High.
