West High Falls to Ankeny in Class 3A Consolation Match

DES MOINES – Class 3A heavyweights West High and Ankeny traded jabs throughout the second half of the 3A third-place match on Saturday afternoon.
It was the Hawks that landed the knockout punch in double overtime.
Kolby Raineri scored the game-winning goal five minutes into the second overtime period to lift sixth-ranked Ankeny to a 4-3 win over No. 5 West High at Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines.
West High closed the season 18-5 while Ankeny finished the year 17-5.
Zach Albright put West High up 1-0 with a goal in the 14th minute and the Trojans held that lead for more than 45 minutes.
Josh Aboagye got the equalizer for Ankeny in the 62nd minute to start a wild 13-minute stretch that featured five goals.
West High took the lead back less than two minutes later on a Taka Oya goal but Ankeny answered with a Caleb Davis score in the 71st minute.
The Trojans pulled ahead one final time just 21 seconds later when Matthew McDonnell scored to put West High up 3-2.
Raineri scored his 14th goal of the season in the 74th minute to even the match at 3-3 and then more than 20 minutes later ended things with a goal in double overtime.
