One of the most successful wrestling coaches in state history is stepping away.
West High announced on Monday that head coach Mark Reiland has resigned his position after 19 seasons leading the program.
In nearly two decades at West High Reiland turned the Trojans into one of the premier programs in the state.
Reiland won seven state titles in 19 seasons at West High (five dual titles and two traditional championships) and ranks in the top 10 in state history with more than 430 career dual victories.
A member of the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame a National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Reiland led West High to dual team titles in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2011.
The five state dual titles are the fourth most for a team in state history.
Under Reiland West High won back-to-back Class 3A traditional titles in 2006 and 2007 and finished runner-up five times in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2011.
West High finished in the top four at state 12 times in 19 seasons under Reiland.
Reiland coached 16 individual state champions including one four-time and one three-time champ.
West High won 10 Mississippi Valley Conference Super Meet titles under Reiland, most recently in 2012.
“I want to thank Coach Reiland for his service to our students at West,” West High Athletic Director Craig Huegel said. “While the results are certainly impressive, Coach Reiland has had an immeasurable positive impact on the lives of those student-athletes fortunate enough to have wrestled for him and for Iowa City West.”
West High placed seventh and crowned two individual champions at the Class 3A state meet in February.
Seniors Nelson Brands and Francis Duggan each won individual titles to help West High finish seventh with 73.5 points last month.
