Solon followed up its state duals runner-up finish from last season with a sixth-place finish on Wednesday.

Ninth-ranked Solon went 1-2 at the Class 2A state dual meet at Wells Fargo Des Moines on Wednesday falling to No. 10 Webster City in the fifth-place match.

Solon (21-7) opened with a 42-25 loss to second-ranked Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (20-4) in the quarterfinals.

The Spartans won six matches against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows but the Cowboys had six pins among their eight wins.

The top match of the dual came at 285 where fifth-ranked Spencer Trenary of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows handed third-ranked Tyler Linderbaum his first loss of the season with a 6-4 decision.

Solon rebounded with a 43-29 win over third-ranked Ballard (21-8) in the consolation semifinals.

The Spartans scored bonus points in seven of eight wins against Ballard and had six pins.

Solon closed the dual season with a 47-30 loss to Webster City.

Mike Hoyle and Zack Bevans each went 3-0 for Solon on Wednesday.

Hoyle had a major decision and a pair of wins at 182 pounds while Bevans had two major decisions and a pin in a perfect day with matches at 152 and 160.

Solon finished second at the state dual meet last season and was making its first back-to-back trips to state duals in program history.
