Ryan Schott and Nick Milder are headed back to the state wrestling meet.  

The Regina duo each earned runner-up finishes at the Class 1A, District 8 tournament at Wilton on Saturday to secure a second consecutive trip to the state meet.

Schott opened district competition with a 9-2 decision over Wilton senior Eli Faison to set up a top-three showdown in the 160-pound title match.

Third-ranked and defending state runner-up Brennan Swafford (49-2) of Mediapolis pinned second-ranked Schott (44-2) with 29 seconds left in the second period of the title match.

Schott will face Central DeCatur senior Luke Jones (43-8) in the opening round of the 1A state tournament on Thursday at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.  

For the second straight week Milder came up just shy of an upset of third-ranked Lisbon senior Bryce Werderman in the 170-pound title match.

Milder (26-4) pinned Trayton Bartholomew of Van Buren in 1:59 in the semifinals to set up a rematch with Werderman in the title match.

Werderman (45-5) edged Milder for the second time in seven days, following up a 5-3 sudden victory win in last week’s sectional final with a 1-0 win on Saturday.

It was the second straight season Werderman had defeated Milder in both the sectional and district meet, winning all four of those postseason matches by decision and by a combined total of eight points.

Despite the loss Milder will return to the state meet for the second straight season where he will face fourth-ranked Cael Krueger (44-2) of Denver in the opening round.

Sophomore Rowan Udell (11-3) finished third at 195 pounds as Regina placed seventh in the team standings with 36 points.

West Branch had a pair of wrestlers come up shy of a trip to state.

Junior Tyler Siemen (24-20) finished third at 106 pounds while senior Jacob Barnhart (20-18) was third at 285 pounds.
