Playing Dubuque Senior has proved to be hazardous to West High winning streaks the past several seasons.

Four years ago it was Dubuque Senior that ended the Trojans’ Class 4A best 60-game winning streak with a 67-47 win in Dubuque.

The Rams were back at it again on Saturday snapping West High’s state record 81-game winning streak with a 68-59 win in a Mississippi Valley Conference contest.

The loss was the first home setback for West High since December 21 of 2010 and dropped the Trojans to 13-3 on the season and 10-1 in MVC play.

Class 4A top-ranked West High has dropped three of its last six games and two in the last week following 66-46 loss to Bishop Miege (Kansas) last Saturday.

“I look at games and chunks of games and we've been struggling since Christmas improving,” West High coach Steve Bergman said. “It all comes down to we just aren’t as disciplined as we need to be. And last Saturday and this Saturday, we got our butts beat. The other team was more disciplined than us and stuck to the game plan better than us.”

Senior point guard Carter Stevens scored a game-high 26 points to lead Dubuque Senior to its fifth straight win.

The Rams improved to 13-4 on the season and 10-2 in MVC play with the win.

“He killed us, he’s good, he’s been good for four years,” Bergman said of Carter. “The problem is when you set a ball screen and the guy who’s defending the screener doesn't hedge, we’re in a world of hurt. About four times we didn’t hedge.”

Patrick McCaffery led West High with 18 points while Seybian Sims added 10 for the Trojans.

Dante Eldridge and Evan Flitz each had nine points for West High.

Noah Carter added 15 points for Dubuque Senior.

Zimmerman’s Late Basket Lifts Liberty

Dawson Zimmerman put back his own miss with seven seconds left to lift Liberty High to a 48-46 win over Wapsie Valley on Saturday in North Liberty.

The win was the second straight for Liberty High which improved to 7-12 on the season while Wapsie Valley dropped to 14-6 with its third loss in five games.

Tyler Grayson hit both ends of a one-and-one with 30 seconds left to put Liberty High up 46-44.

Wapsie Valley tied the game with a basket on the ensuing possession setting the stage for Zimmerman who rebounded his own miss and scored what proved to be the game winner.

Bowen Gryp had a game-high 16 points to lead Liberty High while Ethan O’Donnell added 11 and Andre Brandon had 10 for the Lightning.

Paul Rundquist had nine points and Kirk Drew added eight for Wapsie Valley.

CCA Bounces Back With Win Over Washington

Clear Creek Amana didn’t have long to dwell on its loss to Independence on Friday night.

That turned out to be perfect for the Clippers.

Clear Creek Amana rebounded from a Friday night loss with an 81-56 win over Washington on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference contest in Tiffin.

Darius Moore had a game-high 25 points and grabbed four rebounds and four assists as the Clippers improved to 7-11 with its fifth win in the last seven games.

Tyler Schrepfer had 14 points and Nolan Schwarting added 13 points and five rebounds for the Clippers.
