Clear Creek Amana believed its come-from-behind win over Benton Community last week was the start of a breakthrough.

The Clippers continued to prove themselves right on Friday.

Darius Moore scored the go-ahead basket with a minute left and Clear Creek Amana got a stop on the game’s final possession to secure a 41-40 road win over WAMAC West Division leader South Tama.

The win was the third in the past four games for the Clippers and came on the heels of a disappointing 41-29 loss to Vinton-Shellsburg on Tuesday.

Moore scored a team-high 14 points on Friday as Clear Creek Amana improved to 5-10 on the season and 5-7 in WAMAC West Play.

Nolan Schwarting scored nine points and Tyler Schrepfer had eight for the Clippers.

South Tama dropped to 11-5 with its second straight loss and fell to 10-1 in WAMAC West play.

Coons Pours in 32 to Lead Solon Past Beckman

The last time AJ Coons scored 30 points in a game it wasn’t quite enough to get Solon a win.

Coons hit 30 for the second time in four games on Friday and this time it came in a win.

Coons continued his torrid scoring stretch with a game-high 32 points as Solon held off Dyersille Beckman 66-61 in a WAMAC East contest in Solon.

Luke Ira added 17 points and Ben Krutzfeldt had nine points and eight assists as Solon improved to 11-6 on the season and 7-4 in WAMAC East play with its second consecutive win.

Coons has been a big part of the Spartans’ recent success.

The sophomore guard had a career-high 33 points in a loss to Western Dubuque last Friday, starting a string of four straight games with at least 20 points.

Coons is averaging 26.3 points over the last four games.

Beckman got 21 points from Mitch Gehling and 19 from Michael Keegan while dropping to 10-6 on the season and 7-5 in WAMAC East play.

Balanced Bears Bounce North Cedar

Three players scored at least 15 points as West Branch downed North Cedar 62-51 in a River Valley Conference cross-divisional matchup on Friday in West Branch.

Beau Cornwell had a game-high 18 points and Tanner Lukavsky and Ben Thompson each added 15 as West Branch improved to 10-7 on the season and 8-7 in RVC play with its third consecutive win.

West Branch shot 54 percent from the floor on Fruday and had 18 assists on 26 made field goals.

Tanner Lukavsky had six rebounds, six assists and five steals to go with his 15 points while Thompson and Ted Bridges each had three assists.

Brady Lukavsky added seven points on 3-of-3 shooting and had two assists.

North Cedar dropped to 4-12 on the season and 3-12 in RVC play.

Hempstead Hammers City High

Dubuque Hempstead built a 46-17 halftime lead and cruised to an 83-49 win over City High on Friday in Iowa City.

Keith Johnson led four Hempstead players in double figures with a game-high 23 points as the Mustangs improved to 10-4 on the season and 7-3 in Mississippi Valley Conference play.

Keshawn Christian had 17 points for City High which dropped to 3-10 on the season and 2-8 in MVC play with its fifth consecutive loss.

Jeremy Kambomba added eight points and Ry Threlkeld-Weigand had seven for the Little Hawks.

Regina Upsets Northeast

Regina pushed its winning streak to four with a 52-44 upset of Class 2A eighth-ranked Northeast on Friday in Goose Lake.

Regina improved to 12-3 on the season and 12-1 in RVC play with the win while Northeast had a five-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 15-2 and 12-2 with the loss.
