Another Morgan plans to play basketball at Northern Iowa.
West High junior Cailyn Morgan announced on Twitter Wednesday that she had given a verbal commitment to the Panthers.
“I’m incredibly blessed and humbled to announce that I was given the opportunity to further my education and basketball career at UNI!” Morgan wrote in her tweet.
Morgan will be the third member of her family to play basketball at Northern Iowa, joining brother Jeremy and sister Mikaela who is a junior for the Panthers this season.
“I felt a personal connection with the coaches and the school in general,” Morgan said in a release. They gave me a feeling that I was going to be part of a family, and not just a basketball team. I know that UNI will help me succeed on and off the court! I am truly excited to be a Panther!”
The 5-foot-8 Morgan averaged 6.1 points and 2 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game last season as West High went 21-4 and advanced to the semifinals of the Class 5A state tournament.
Morgan averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds per game in a pair of state tournament games, scoring 11 points in a semifinal loss to West Des Moines Valley.
“Cailyn has grown as a player in her two years at West. She is a very good defender and has the ability to get to the hoop,” West High coach BJ Mayer said. “She continues to improve and we are looking for many more great things from her in her final years at West. I believe that UNI is a great fit for her and will allow her to improve her game and get a quality education.”
Northern Iowa is coming off a 24-9 season and included a spot in the Mississippi Valley Conference tournament title game and a trip to the NCAA tournament.
