Solon Defense Shines Again in Shutout of Mount Pleasant

Rainy, muddy nights like Friday have a way of producing strong defensive performances.
Then again every game that Solon has been involved in this season regardless has come with an impressive defense showing.
Solon continued its defensive dominance in a 33-0 win over Mount Pleasant on Friday in a Class 3A District 5 matchup delayed nearly an hour by thunderstorms.
Class 3A top-ranked Solon improved to 7-0 on the season and 5-0 in district play with its second straight shutout and fifth of the season.
Solon held Mount Pleasant (4-3, 2-3) to 80 total yards, including just two yards rushing, and Coal Flansburg returned one of the Spartans’ two interceptions 63 yards for a touchdown.
It was the third consecutive game Solon held an opponent under 81 yards of offense and the Spartans have now allowed less than 100 yards in four games this season.
The wet weather didn’t slow the Solon offense.
Solon rushed for 276 yards, three yards off their season-high rushing total, while rolling up 445 yards of offense.
Kendrick Harris rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries and Hunter Kula added 89 yards on 13 carries.
Cam Miller threw for 169 yards and had a pair of touchdown passes to Payton Bandy as Solon scored 33 points or more for the sixth consecutive game.
A thunderstorm forced a nearly hour delay with 10:22 left in the first quarter.
Following the delay Solon needed less than six minutes to jump to a 13-0 lead.
Zach Wegmann recovered a fumble to set up a 1-yard Flansburg touchdown run that gave Solon a 6-0 lead with 9:19 left in the opening quarter.
Just more than three minutes later Harris scored on a 14-yard touchdown run that put Solon up 13-0.
Solon led 13-0 at the half but quickly put the game out of reach in the third quarter.
Miller connected with Bandy on scoring strikes of 3 and 58 yards to push the lead to 27-0 with 1:39 left in the third quarter.
On the ensuing Mount Pleasant possession Flansburg picked off a pass and rumbled 63 yards for his second interception return for a touchdown of the season.
With the pick-six by Flansburg the Solon defense has now scored touchdowns in five different games and has six defensive scores on the season.
Junior Jack Stahle added an interception, his second of the season.
Bandy led Solon with four receptions for 132 yards and two scores.
