If there were any concerns about the Regina offense still lingering after a slow start to the season Isaac Vollstedt, Nick Phillips and the rest of the Regals may have erased them for good on Friday night.
Vollstedt rushed for 130 yards and four touchdowns and Phillips had 112 yards of scrimmage as Class 1A fourth-ranked Regina (4-2) rolled up 500 yards of offense in a 49-7 win over previously unbeaten Wilton.
“After those first two games, you saw how our offense did and we just could not get it moving so I think tonight gave us a lot of confidence,” Phillips said. “Obviously, Wilton is a great team and to be able to show the state what we can and what we are capable of I think it was a great team win for us.”
Senior quarterback Michael Conlon passed for 144 yards and ran for 50 yards and a score as the Regals rolled up 258 yards on the ground.
The win was the 50th straight district win for Regina and put the Regals in the District 4 drivers seat as the lone unbeaten team.
Wilton dropped to 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in district play while Regina seized control of the district race at 4-0.
“It was a good win for us I thought we played pretty well and I thought Wilton played tough,” Regina coach Marv Cook said. “Isaac was amazing and then I thought Jake was at the top of his game tonight too and Mike did a great job running the offense. I thought our playmakers made big plays and that was the difference.”
Vollstedt put Regina up early with a 40-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.
It remained 6-0 until Regina rattled off 27 second-quarter points in less than nine minutes.
Conlon put Regina up 13-0 with a 2-yard plunge and Vollstedt then scored on second-quarter scoring runs of 6, 5 and 9 yards as the Regals took a 34-0 halftime lead.
“Isaac had three or four runs where he just made four or five guys miss,” Cook said. “He was playing at a high level tonight.”
Phillips padded the Regina lead with a 27-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that Cook called one of the best he had witnessed in a high school game.
“He made one of the best runs I have seen in high school football,” Cook said. “It had everything. It had a power element, it had a jump cut, it had a spin, it was unbelievable. I hope we have it on video because it was phenomenal.”
Phillips downplayed the run which came on a direct snap, a new wrinkle the Regina coaching staff has added to get the elusive Phillips the ball.
“We put it in this week and right off the bat coach (Ed) Hinkel said you are going to really like what we are about to put in,” Phillips said “Every guy on the offense would like to set up and play quarterback and run the ball so it was just really fun being able to be back there and run the ball.”
Phillips finished with 60 yards on five carries and also caught three passes for 52 yards.
“He made a huge catch over the middle early on a vertical route and went up in traffic and got, that was his best game,” Cook said of Phillips said. “We did a poor job with him early on getting him the ball and he’s playing incredible well right now. Him and Isaac were difference makers tonight no question.”
Regina capped its scoring when freshman Ashton Cook connected with Bryce Barnett on a 73-yard touchdown pass.
Conlon finished 9-of-14 passing for 144 yards with Patrick Clark catching three passes for 61 yards.
The Regina defense was excellent on Friday as well.
Regina forced five turnovers while holding Wilton to a season-low seven points, 31 below its season average.
“I think on offense and defense we just started clicking,” Phillips said. “We had everyone healthy tonight and our defense showed up to play and our offense got it done.”
Regina picked off Wilton quarterback Jerome Mays four times, three in the first half as Jayden Kies, Ryan Schott, Alec Wick and Cole White all had interceptions.
“We’ve been working on that,” Cook said. “Coach (Mark) Mitchell has kind of brought an emphasis and we try to point it out so it was good to see those guys turn into ball hawks a little bit.”
White also recovered a fumble and had two sacks while Joe Hein led Regina with eight solo stops.
Cook praised the play of senior defensive lineman Steve Sehl who finished with five solo stops.
“We did a good job,” Cook said. “Mays was tough, he was elusive and he gave us fits the first couple series but we just swarmed him pretty well.”
