The City High girls cross country team competed with a new head coach for the first time in two decades on Tuesday.

It looked like the same old Little Hawks.

City High opened the season in impressive fashion on Tuesday recording a perfect score of 15 to cruise to the team title at the Iowa Mennonite Early Bird Invitational in Kalona.

Senior Amelia Morrow won the individual title in 20:15.09 as the Little Hawks produced the top seven finishers in the debut meet of first-year co-head coaches Ryan and Lynn Ahlers.

The Ahlers replaced Tom Mittman who led City High to five state titles and eight runner-up finishes in 20 seasons leading the program.

On Tuesday, City High easily outdistanced the field finishing 91 points in front of runner-up Washington.

Kinsee Brands was the individual runner-up in a time of 20:18.78 while Aly Hecker was third in 20:38.15.  

The City High boys were nearly as impressive, winning the team title with 16 points and finishing 31 points in front of runner-up Cedar Rapids Jefferson.

Caden Turnbough won the individual title in 16:46.27 more than 14 seconds in front of teammate Lucas Firmstone who was runner-up in 17:01.65.

Quenton Max was third and James Momberg finished fourth to pace City High.
