City High outscored the Lions 20-3 in the second half last season and it was more of the same on Friday.
Zach Jones returned a punt for a touchdown and caught a touchdown pass in the second half to help City High open the season with a win for just the second time in the past six seasons.
Senior running Davonte Foster scored a pair of first half touchdowns to put City High up 13-0 but Linn-Mar rallied to tie the game at the half.
Jones gave City High the lead for good with a 65-yard punt return touchdown and helped put the game away when he hauled in a touchdown pass from Bryce Hunger to put City High up 27-13.
City High hosts Pleasant Valley (0-1) next week at Bates Field.
