Last week Sarah Lehman got the ending she wanted in a way she never imagined.
Lehman recorded a state tournament record 22 strikeouts in her final prep game, helping Regina claim its second Class 2A title in three seasons with a 5-4 win over Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in 16-innings.
The Iowa Girls Coaches Association put the finishes touches on Lehman’s brilliant career on Friday naming her a 2A first-team all-state selection for the third straight season.
“It’s amazing,” Lehman said after winning the state title. “To go out with a game like this and win a championship together there is no better feeling.”
Lehman headlined a group of four Regals to earn all-state honors from the IGCA.
Senior outfielder Emma Corkery and sophomore infielder Katie Bracken joined Lehman on the 2A first team after helping the Regals to a 30-11 record, a third straight 2A title game appearance and second title in three seasons.
Junior Emily Bonnett was an honorable mention pick for Regina.
The top pitcher in Class 2A the past three seasons, Lehman had her best all-around campaign this summer.
Lehman posted a 16-6 record with a .95 ERA while striking out 266 in 162 1/3 innings.
The senior righthander did her best work in the postseason, going 6-0 with a .27 while striking out 78 in 51 innings.
Lehman saved her best for last, allowing 10 hits and no earned runs in the 16-inning win in the title game.
“She kept moving the ball around,” Regina coach Jon Prottsman said of Lehman in the title game. “Look at the scoreboard 16 innings, and what’s Sarah’s number? 16. We just kind of played around until we got to the 16th inning so she could win it.”
Lehman also hit .392 with a team-high six home runs and drove in 24 runs.
Bracken and Corkery were both honorable mention picks last season but took a big step up in 2017.
Corkery hit .367 and scored a team-high 32 runs while Bracken hit .303 and led Regina with 33 RBI and 25 walks.
Bracken also went 10-4 with a 2.06 ERA in 98 2/3 innings pitched.
Bonnett was an honorable mention pick for the second straight season after hitting .326 and driving in 20 runs.
West Branch eighth-grader Nick Henson was a third-team pick in 2A following a debut season in which she led the Bears with a .527 averaging, 41 runs and 33 stolen bases.
Freshman Taylor Thein and Kaiya Luneckas were both honorable mention selections for West Branch.
Solon had four players named to the 3A team including a pair of first-team picks in seniors Bryn Hanrahan and Jess Heick.
Hanrahan earned all-state honors for the fifth straight season and was a first-team pick for the third time after hitting .472 and leading Solon with 76 hits and 49 runs.
The Iowa State recruit had 17 doubles among her 23 extra-base hits, drove in 36 runs and stole 46 bases from her leadoff spot.
Heick was a first-team pick for the first time after earning second-team honors last year.
The senior catcher hit .458 and led Solon with nine home runs and 54 RBI.
Sophomore Taylor Ryan was a second-team pick after leading Solon with a .529 batting average while junior Madison Rogers was a third-team pick.
Rogers hit .364 with six home runs and 31 RBI.
In Class 4A, Clear Creek Amana senior outfielder Abbi Kinnaird was a second-team selection after hitting .433 with 31 RBI for the Clippers.
West High had a pair of first-team picks in Class 5A as senior Taleah Smith and freshman Brylee Klosterman both added to their all-state accomplishments.
Smith earned all-state honors for the fourth straight season and was a first-team pick for the third consecutive year.
The Norther Iowa recruit hit .436 for West High while scoring 34 runs and stealing 43 bases.
A third-team pick last season as an eighth-grader, Klosterman earned first-team status for the first time following a season that saw her lead West High with a .452 batting average, six home runs and 39 runs.
Klosterman also had a team-high 17 doubles and drove in 35 runs this season.
