IOWA CITY – Two goals in the opening four minutes all but ended the chances for any nervous moments for West High in of Tuesday’s senior night matchup against Dubuque Senior.

The early goals couldn’t calm the nerves for Zach Logsden or Zach Frisbie who ditched their defender roles for a final chance at offensive success.

Both Frisbie and Logsden made the most of their offensive opportunities on Tuesday helping Class 3A seventh-ranked West High roll to a 9-0 win over Dubuque Senior (2-9) in a Mississippi Valley Conference match at Ed Barker Field.

Logsden scored his first career goal and Frisbie stepped out of the goalie box for the first time in varsity play to add an assist as West High improved to 10-5 on the season and 7-3 in MVC play.

“There were actually a lot of nerves,” Logsden said. “Today was really the last time for me to get a chance at a goal, especially in front of the home crowd so I was a little nervous but it worked out.”

Five different seniors scored goals in the opening half as West High built a 6-0 halftime cushion.

Eight Trojans got in on the scoring act on Tuesday as West High bounced back from back-to-back losses to Waukee and Norwalk on Saturday.

“To get a win like this and see some people score that have never scored before it was really special,” senior Kelvin Encarnacao said. “On Saturday, we didn’t get what we wanted but today getting a win like this is good, especially on the occasion, and we are just going to keep moving forward.”

Seniors Nicolas Raley and Sam Choi each had goals that gave West High a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the match.

Alex Andersen made it 3-0 with his goal in the 26th minute and retired to the sideline shortly after as players like Frisbie and Logsden took their shot at finding the net.

“It was definitely a good time,” West High coach Brad Stiles said. “Everybody getting a chance to play and some guys moving around is always a good thing and a good opportunity.”

Frisbie swapped his goalie jersey for jersey number 23 and a spot as a forward while Logsden made the temporary transition from center back stopper to goal scorer.

Logsden notched his first career goal in the 33rd minute to give West High a 4-0 lead.

Fellow defender Adam Rose made it 5-0 with a goal less than a minute later and Michael Schilling scored with 49 seconds left in the half to give the Trojans a 6-0 halftime advantage.

“It’s fun because people like me get a chance to go up and play and I got my first goal in varsity,” Logsden said. “That was pretty fun for me but a 1-0 game would be fun too.”

Frisbie finally got into the act in the second half when he set up Raley’s second goal with a perfectly placed cross into the box.

Freshman Micah Frisbie scored his first career goal off a Schilling assist and Kyler Krupp capped the scoring with a goal in the 62 minute.

“Getting that feeling of getting that one goal of your shoulders is always neat for guys,” Stiles said. “It was good for Micah even though he’s a freshman and Zach Frisbie getting an assist was great. I thought it was pretty cool seeing those brothers out there playing forward.”

The difficult level cranks up quick for West High as the Trojans close the regular season with three straight road games beginning with a trip to Class 2A No. 5 Dubuque Wahlert Friday.
