IOWA CITY – Zach Jones has tried a little bit of everything this season.

The event resume for the City High junior this season lists everything from hurdles and sprints to relays.

Jones has even been lobbying City High coaches for a future shot at the 800.

So, what does Jones like best? Simple.

“I like to win,” that’s what I like to do,” Jones said flatly. “I’ll do anything for the team basically, whatever coach says, I’ll do it.”

He didn’t do any winning at the Forwald/Coleman Relays on Thursday night at Raffensperger Track at City High but Jones was close.

Jones flashed his talent on Friday collecting a trio of top-four finishes while helping City High to a fifth-place team finish with 81 points.

“He is a very talented young man,” City High coach Mike Moore said. “He reminds me a lot of some of the great talent we had back in the 90s and 2000s that were state champion type guys. He’s got that kind of athletic ability and he is fierce competitor.”

Jones was second in the 400 in a season-best time of 49.93.

The 49.93 in the 400 is the sixth best time in the state this season and was just off the pace set by Pleasant Valley junior KeShawn Baker who won in a time of 49.37.

“We got to see the great competition out here and I think it just motivates us to get better and faster,” Jones said.

Jones joined Daniel Brown, Lucas Firmstone and Jack Roggeveen on the City High 4×400 relay team that placed third in a season-best time of 3:25.26.

He also ran on the City High shuttle hurdle relay team that finished fourth in 1:00.36, its fastest time of the season.

Jim McMillan added a runner-up finish in the 800 for City High and ran a leg on the 4×800 team that finishes second in 8:10.83.

“I am really, really happy with the progress of our guys,” Moore said. “Our shuttle hurdle team is coming along and we are getting some sprinters back so we had a 4×100 team that looked pretty good. Our 4×400 looked pretty good and we have some nice things going on.”

With the deadline for Drake Relays qualification looming the City High girls team had a trio of relay teams hoping to post Drake qualifying times on Thursday.

That was the hope but it wasn’t the focus for the Little Hawk sprint medley and 4×200 relay teams that posted season best times Thursday.

“They are all seasons best, sprint med, 4×200, 4×800 that is the fastest we have run all year,” City High coach Joe Graf said. “I know the girls might be disappointed but not making it to Drake but we tell them we are not training for Drake we training for three days in May.”

The sprint medley team of Emma Clark, Azzura Sartini-Rideout, Emma Cooper and Tiara Green to nearly a second of their time while place second in 1:52.37.

Clark, Green, Cooper and Sydney DePrenger were third in the 4×200 in a time of 1:47.33.

“We came here to qualify in those two events but we just wanted to drop seconds off of our times,” DePrenger said. “Of course we want to qualify but that’s not the focus for us.”

The same foursome finished third in the 4×400 in 4:16.37 and the City High 4×800 team placed third in 9:53.02.

“We just go out and run for time and do the best we can,” Cooper said. “Drake isn’t the end of the season, state is our ultimate goal so we just want to go out and do our very best and drop our times. That’s all we go for.”
