IOWA CITY – Slowing a scorer like Regina sharpshooter Mary Crompton is a challenge for any opponent.
When Crompton is surrounded by players like Sarah Lehman and Alex Wiese that task becomes significantly more difficult.
That was the dilemma Regina opponents faced this season as Crompton, Wiese and Lehman combined for nearly 49 points per game while helping Regina to a 26-1 record and a spot in the Class 2A semifinals.
The trio accounted for just under 70 percent of Regina’s scoring as the Regals ranked fourth in the state in scoring at 70.6 points per game.
On Tuesday, all three of those players earned all-state honors from the Iowa Newspaper Association.
“They all put in a lot of time and a lot of work so I’m really happy for them,” Regina coach Jeff Wallace said. “I’m very proud of the season they had.”
Crompton headlined the Regina all-state selections, being named to the Class 2A first-team for the second straight season.
The 5-foot-8 junior had the best season of her career as a junior averaging a team-high 18 points per game while ranking fifth in the state with 76 3-pointers.
Crompton posted career-high shooting percentages from the field (55%), 3-point range (47%) and the free throw line (88%) and scored in double figures in 24 of 27 games.
“She definitely did expand her game this year,” Wallace said of Crompton. “She was a lot better off the dribble drive this year and we were able to space the floor for her to get her more opportunity to drive.”
Crompton had nine games with 20 or more points including a career-high 39 points in a win over Cascade.
She ranked second on the team with 2.7 assists per game and added 2.5 steals per game.
“She can get on a roll where she can hit a bunch in a row,” Wallace said. “She has a high IQ and a high confidence level in her game but you have high confidence in your game when you practice as much as she does.”
Lehman earned all-state honors for the first time when she was named to the 2A second tea following the best season of her career.
The 5-foot-10 Lehman ranked third on the team in scoring at 15 points per game and grabbed 4.3 rebounds per contest.
“She committed more time to basketball this year than she ever has before,” Wallace said. “She was just really receptive to playing a different role this year which allowed her to face the basket and we really took advantage of her athleticism and she was hard to guard.
Lehman shot 55 percent from the floor and a career-best 73 percent from the free throw line while scoring double figures 23 times.
She led Regina with 2.9 steals per game.
“She has always been a tremendous athlete but this year she just wasn’t an athlete playing basketball she became a basketball player,” Wallace said of Lehman.
Wiese was named to the 2A third team after averaging 15.7 points and a team-high 9.4 rebounds per game in her first season at Regina.
The 6-foot sophomore shot 63 percent from the floor after transferring from Tipton where her freshman season was cut short by a torn ACL.
“She has put in so much time to get back to where she was with her rehab,” Wallace said. “She works as hard as any kid I have ever coached.”
Wiese had 10 double-doubles this season and closed the season by recording a double-double in seven of the final nine games.
She posted back-to-back double-doubles in the state tournament averaging 20 points and 12.5 rebounds in a pair of games at state.
“She really took off I thought after Christmas break,” Wallace said. “After the break is when she really started to dominate on both ends of the floor.”
