Game of the Week
4A No. 1 West High (14-1) vs. Webster Groves, MO (15-3)
The date for West High’s appearance in the 2017 Best of the Midwest Showcase has been moved once, the opponent has been switched a few times but what hasn’t changed is that the Trojans should get one of their best tests of the season on Saturday.
West High was originally scheduled to play Kansas power Blue Valley Northwest in the event last month but it was rescheduled due to inclement weather.
The new opponent for West High, Webster Groves, is ranked fourth in the Missouri large school rankings by stlhighschoolsports.com and is led by a pair of juniors who are Division 1 commits.
Courtney Ramey is a Louisville commit while 6-foot-9 junior Carte’Are Gordon is ranked tenth by ESPN in the class of 2018 and is committed to St. Louis University.
The duo has helped Webster Groves to a 15-3 record that includes a nine-game winning streak the Statesmen bring into this week.
West High has won nine straight after a 78-63 win over second-ranked Dubuque Senior on Friday.
What to Watch
It’s always interesting when Highway 1 rivals Mount Vernon and Solon hook up.
The second meeting this season and fifth in the past two years on Tuesday in Mount Vernon should be no exception.
Seventh-ranked Mount Vernon (13-4) outscored Solon 32-17 in the second half to pull away for a 60-40 win in the first meeting on January 13 in Solon.
All four losses for Mount Vernon have come to teams ranked in the top four in Class 3A including two to second-ranked and WAMAC East Division leader West Delaware.
The top priority for Solon (11-6) will be slowing Mount Vernon senior sharp shooter Austin Ash.
Ash, who will walk on at Iowa next year, is the only Mount Vernon player averaging double figures at 21.6 points per game and had half of the Mustangs’ 60 points in the January win over Solon.
Keep an Eye On
City High (3-14) has lost four straight since a 68-57 win over Cedar Rapids Jefferson on January 20 but has a chance to build some momentum heading into the post season this week.
The Little Hawks travel to Cedar Rapids Washington (3-14) on Tuesday and host Dubuque Wahlert on Friday
City High defeated Cedar Rapids Washington 69-50 in the first meeting between the two teams on January 10.
The Little Hawks close the regular season with three straight home games, hosting Linn-Mar and Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the final week of the regular season.
