Game of the Week
Solon (6-1) at Class 3A No. 3 West Delaware (7-0)
Solon closed out 2016 with five straight wins.
The Spartans open 2017 with a chance to see how they stack up against one of the best teams in Class 3A.
Solon travels to third-ranked West Delaware (7-0) on Friday for a matchup of WAMAC East Division unbeatens.
West Delaware has won its seven games by an average of 17 points and has had just one game decided by less than 12 points.
The Hawks are led by 6-foot-7 senior Derek Krogmann who is averaging a double-double with 16.9 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.
Tyler Kelley (13.3) and 6-foot-6 John Nagel (10.7) both average more than 10 points per game for West Delaware.
What to Watch
West High had plenty of time to think about its first loss of the season after falling to Cedar Rapids Prairie 80-71 in its final game of 2016 on December 20.
After two weeks of waiting the Trojans will have a chance to put that loss behind them when they host Cedar Rapids Washington on Tuesday.
Prairie shot 56 percent from the field in the Dec. 20 win over West High and was 15-of-26 from beyond the 3-point arc.
West High opens 2017 with back-to-back games against one-win teams in Washington and Dubuque Wahlert before a four-game stretch that includes games with Linn-Mar and Kansas power Blue Valley Northwest, Bettendorf (5-2) and a rematch with Prairie.
Keep An Eye On
After a bit of a slow start Stu Ordman has Regina starting to hit stride as 2017 approaches.
Regina started 2-3 but closed out December with back-to-back impressive wins over West Branch and Benton Community.
Freshmen Masen Miller and Even Brauns provided a boost during the back-to-back wins to close the 2016 schedule.
The 6-foot-6 Brauns averaged 16.5 points and 3.5 rebounds over the past two games while Miller had eight points in both wins while hitting 4-of-5 attempts from behind the 3-point line.
